About

A Western Cape wine atlas, not another copied directory.

WineFarmz exists to put Cape wine farms in the correct Wine of Origin geography, with coordinates you can trust and sources you can inspect.

What we cover

Western Cape only. 688 wine farms, each with a map pin, placed in its Wine of Origin region and district (and a ward when the pin clearly falls inside one). Pages cover tastings, restaurants, places to stay, picnics and other experiences, with phone numbers, hours and directions.

Where the information comes from

  • Farm list: our own list of Western Cape wine farms with coordinates for each cellar door.
  • Appellations: SAWIS / WOSA Wine of Origin hierarchy, written as original region and district copy.
  • Identity: OpenStreetMap Overpass (craft/tourism=winery) and Wikidata SPARQL for websites, phones, hours, Wikipedia links and inception years.
  • Narrative: Wikipedia intro extracts where an article about the farm itself exists (attributed).
  • Wine lists: wine names and grape varieties from wine.co.za, credited on each farm page. Tasting notes are not republished.
  • Farm websites: homepage and navbar pages, used for phone, hours, restaurant, stay, email and a photograph. The photo is saved on this site so the page still loads if their server is down.
  • YouTube: a channel only when that farm’s website links it, or Wikidata records a channel id. Recent uploads come from YouTube’s public channel feed. A video mentioned in a blog post is not treated as their channel.
  • Wine routes: membership, phone, website and facility labels from the route associations (Franschhoek, Durbanville, and the other Cape routes). Their marketing text is not republished. The sentence on a farm page is written from those facts.
  • Terroir: Open-Meteo elevation; ISRIC SoilGrids pH, clay and organic carbon at the pin.

For farms

A farm can claim its own listing and correct the text, photographs, hours, and contact details. WineFarmz sends a single-use 6-digit PIN. The farm chooses a password, and the office then shows only that farm.

Honesty rules

OSM facility tags are clues. SoilGrids is a global model, not a pit description. District assignment uses bounding boxes and centroids, not gazetted polygons. If a farm sits on a boundary, the nearest honest district wins.
