How to visit Western Cape wine farms from Cape Town

The winelands are not one loop. Constantia is a morning. Stellenbosch is a day. Swartland wants a slower car. Hemel-en-Aarde is a weekend. Use districts, not famous names, to build a route that does not zigzag the N1.

Half days from the city

Cape Town — Constantia and Durbanville. Uber-able, heritage-heavy, easy first tasting.

Classic full days

Stellenbosch is the densest cellar-door district. Pair neighbouring farms, not opposite sides of the Helderberg. Franschhoek is a valley cul-de-sac: book lunch, taste on the way in or out. Paarl and Wellington sit on the same inland axis.

Worth a dedicated day

Swartland cellars are scattered; map them first. Elgin is over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Walker Bay / Hemel-en-Aarde pairs with Hermanus. Robertson is through the tunnel and into limestone country.

Road-trip districts

Calitzdorp, Lutzville, Plettenberg Bay and Cape Agulhas are not Cape Town day trips. Treat them as Route 62, West Coast or Garden Route legs.
