Guide
Wine of Origin, explained for people who actually visit farms.
South Africa’s Wine of Origin scheme is a truth-in-labelling system. If a bottle says Stellenbosch, the grapes must come from Stellenbosch. It does not dictate varieties, yields or trellising. That makes it perfect as the spine of a travel atlas.
The four geographic layers
- Geographical unit — here, always Western Cape.
- Region — Coastal Region, Cape South Coast, Breede River Valley, Klein Karoo, Olifants River.
- District — Stellenbosch, Paarl, Walker Bay, Robertson, and the rest of the map.
- Ward — the tightest terroir claim, such as Constantia, Bottelary, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley or Elim.
Estate wine and single vineyard sit beside this tree as producer designations, not as places you can tour as a district. Boberg is a special regional claim for fortified wine from Paarl, Franschhoek, Wellington and Tulbagh.
How WineFarmz uses it
Every farm page states the chain we assigned from coordinates. Ward is only shown when the pin falls in a conservative box. That avoids pretending we have a cadastral WO polygon for every hillside. District pages are the main landing pages for search: “Stellenbosch wine farms”, “Swartland wine farms”, “Hemel-en-Aarde” via Walker Bay.
Coastal Region
The Coastal Region is South Africa's best-known Wine of Origin region: a sweep of Atlantic-influenced valleys wrapping Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and the Swartland.
Stellenbosch Franschhoek Paarl Wellington Swartland Darling Tulbagh Cape Town
Cape South Coast
The Cape South Coast is the Western Cape's cool-climate frontier: Elgin apples-and-vines, Hemel-en-Aarde's shale benches, Elim's wind-raked flats and a scatter of Overberg valleys.

Breede River Valley
The Breede River Valley — Robertson, Breedekloof and Worcester — is a limestone-and-river landscape that quietly produces a large share of South Africa's bottled wine.

Klein Karoo
The Klein Karoo is South Africa's inland wine desert-edge: Calitzdorp's port-style specialists, Montagu, Tradouw and scattered high, dry vineyards.
Olifants River
The Olifants River region follows the West Coast hinterland from Citrusdal and Piekenierskloof down toward Lutzville, Vredendal and Bamboes Bay.
