Farms with the most visitor information (opening hours, phone numbers, photos) are listed first.

Swartland wine used to mean bulk. In the last two decades it has come to mean old-vine Chenin, Syrah, Mediterranean blends and a deliberately unpolished aesthetic. Malmesbury is the service town; Riebeek-Kasteel and Riebeek West sit under the Kasteelberg; the Paardeberg granite pluton is a terroir all of its own.

Wards include Malmesbury, Paardeberg, Riebeekberg, Riebeeksrivier, Porseleinberg, St Helena Bay and others. Rainfall is lower than Stellenbosch. Dryland farming is common. Soils are often Malmesbury shale with granite islands. The wines can be saline, scented and structurally tight rather than lush.

Visitors should plan more driving than in Franschhoek. Cellars are scattered, some by appointment, some on farm roads. A mapped list with coordinates is the difference between a good Swartland day and a dusty wrong turn.
