East of the Langeberg the winelands change character. The Klein Karoo is hotter, drier and more spacious. Calitzdorp has built a reputation on Portuguese varieties and fortified wine; Montagu, Tradouw and the Langeberg-Garcia district add still wine and visitor stops on the Route 62 road trip.
Farms here are fewer and further apart than in Stellenbosch. That makes a mapped directory unusually useful: travellers planning a Karoo loop need to know which cellars are actually open, how far they sit from Calitzdorp or Oudtshoorn, and which names are wine farms versus farmstalls. Wine of Origin Klein Karoo is the regional claim; Calitzdorp is the district most visitors mean when they search for Karoo wine.
Soils swing from river alluvium to stony, well-drained slopes. Irrigation is essential. The best bottles tend to come from sites that keep acidity in the heat — altitude, aspect, or a breeze funnelled through a kloof.
