Black Elephant Vintners is a wine farm in Franschhoek, Western Cape. About 67 km from Cape Town.
Black Elephant Vintners (BEV) is not a classic Cape Dutch manor tasting room. It is a boutique Franschhoek cellar-door on Uitkyk Street—40a Uitkyk Street, a short hop from the village core—built around a deliberately unconventional idea: that serious wine and curated music belong in the same glass. Official experiences on bevintners.co.za centre on owner-hosted Headline Act wine-and-music sessions, team-hosted Silent Disco flights, and casual Bottle Service. For travellers tired of identical “five wines and a view” pit stops, BEV is one of the clearest alternatives on the Franschhoek Wine Valley map.
The name itself is a partnership story rather than a marketing slogan. Managing director Kevin Swart (Afrikaans swart = black), Raymond Ndlovu (ndlovu = elephant in Zulu), and cellarmaster Jacques Wentzel (the vintner) formed the brand after Swart’s move from Johannesburg to a small Franschhoek farm and a 2012–2013 collaboration that folded Amistad winemaking skill into Black Elephant’s creative business DNA. The official About page frames the house style as rule-breaking with respect for craft: creative labels, small-batch ranges, and tasting formats designed to feel social rather than ceremonial.
This is the flagship. Official copy calls it “The main stage”—a guided Music & Wine experience hosted by an owner (Kevin or Jacques), with storytelling, wine philosophy, and silent-disco headphones where songs are individually paired to each of eight wines. The line-up spans Cap Classique, flagships, and crowd favourites. Duration is 2–3 hours (reservation pages also list 150–180 minutes). Capacity is capped at 30 seats, minimum booking two people, and there is one show per week: Saturdays at 11:00. Cost is R350 per person. Payment confirmation is required; refunds need 48-hour cancellation. Custom dates are possible by arrangement. Optional nibbles on arrival include biltong, cheese board, disco platter, or droëwors—priced as add-ons rather than a meal package.
Silent Disco is the team-hosted, weekday-friendly format. Wireless headphones and curated playlists set atmosphere; music is not paired glass-by-glass (the estate explicitly points guests who want song-per-wine curation to Headline Act). Three official tiers:
Duration runs roughly 45–90 minutes. Capacity is 20 people. Hours published for Silent Disco: Monday–Saturday 12:00–18:00; reservation pages also note Friday until 19:00. Bookings guarantee a seat; walk-ins are welcome if space remains. Refund window is 24 hours.
Not a tasting flight. Guests buy a bottle from the range, sit with music and Franschhoek views, and stay without a timed flight. Maximum four guests per bottle. Same Mon–Sat afternoon window (Fri late). Booking recommended for seating. Across formats, buying six bottles makes the tasting free—an official reservation-page offer worth planning around if you intend to purchase.
BEV’s catalogue is deliberately playful in naming—labels such as Two Dogs, a Peacock & a Horse, Three Men in a Tub, and The Fox and the Flamingo sit alongside more serious Franschhoek and Western Cape bottlings (Amistad, Back Roads varietals, Cap Classique, red blends). Treat the experience as storytelling plus wine, not a museum lecture. If you care most about MCC, book The Bubbles or ensure Cap Classique seats appear in Headline Act’s eight-wine line-up. Festival versus Backstage language on the site maps to access tiers rather than vineyard blocks—ask your ambassador which current releases sit in each band on the day you visit.
Email rebels@bevintners.co.za or call +27 21 876 2903. Online reservations: bevintners.co.za/reservation/. Headline Act must be booked ahead; Silent Disco and Bottle Service are safer with a booking on busy valley weekends. Pair BEV with nearby Uitkyk / mountain-end farms (e.g. Cape Chamonix) or a village lunch rather than stacking it against another long seated tasting—the Headline Act alone needs a half-day mindset. Pets and walk-up Saturday Headline Act seats are not realistic assumptions: treat Saturday 11:00 as appointment theatre.
Prefer midweek Silent Disco if Saturday Headline Act is sold out; the formats are complementary rather than duplicates. Photographers should expect a lively room rather than a silent museum cellar—headphones on, conversation up. International visitors: keep the 48-hour Headline Act and 24-hour Silent Disco cancellation rules in mind when flights shift. Designated-driver planning matters more here than at quiet manor houses because music and longer sittings encourage a second bottle under Bottle Service rules.
Among Franschhoek cellar doors, few commit this hard to music as structure rather than background. Verified 2026 official pages still list Headline Act, three Silent Disco tiers, Bottle Service, the six-bottle tasting waiver, owner hosts, and the Uitkyk Street address—enough specificity for travellers who want atmosphere without inventing spa-day fluff. Book the format that matches your patience: three wines and headphones, or three hours with the people whose names are on the bottle.

Franschhoek Valley is a compact, dramatic district: a cul-de-sac of vineyards between the Groot Drakenstein, Franschhoek and Klein Drakenstein mountains.
Elevation and soil figures are modelled at the pin, not a vineyard block survey. Use them to compare farms, not to quote a technical sheet.
