Walker Bay · Western Cape
Bouchard Finlayson is a wine farm in Walker Bay, Western Cape. About 93 km from Cape Town.
Bouchard Finlayson is one of Hemel-en-Aarde’s foundational boutique estates—cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a Burgundian bent, founded in 1989 by Burgundian Paul Bouchard and South African trailblazer Peter Finlayson. Finlayson had already built the valley’s first modern winery at Hamilton Russell in the mid-1970s and is widely credited with pioneering serious South African Pinot Noir. The Tollman family (Red Carnation hotels) purchased the estate in 2000. Official site: bouchardfinlayson.co.za.
Critical visitor fact (2025–2027 planning window): the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley estate tasting room is temporarily closed while the property undergoes a major transformation. Do not drive up expecting an open valley cellar door, vineyard walk, or on-farm restaurant until the estate itself announces a reopen. Historic experiences pages that still list estate tastings, cellar tours, or fynbos walks are superseded while the farm is closed—confirm before travelling.
While the valley home is offline, tastings and retail continue at the Pop Up by Bouchard Finlayson on the ground floor of the Harbour Square Hotel, 5 Harbour Road, Hermanus—in the harbour precinct (entrance described in local coverage as near Fisherman’s Cottage / behind Rossouw Modern Art Gallery; parking noted along Harbour and Main roads and near Burgundy Restaurant). The pop-up opened 12 December 2025 and is positioned to run for the foreseeable future while redevelopment continues; tertiary coverage (EatPlayDrink / Wanted, early 2026) frames the valley closure as lasting at least into 2027. Always re-check bouchardfinlayson.co.za/place before you go.
Coverage aligned with estate communications describes three curated formats drawn from the Legacy and Alchemy collections:
Wines are also offered by the glass and by the bottle. Itemised Rand tasting fees were not printed on the official place page when checked in October 2026—ask on arrival or email tastingroom@bouchardfinlayson.co.za. Winemaker Chris Albrecht leads the cellar today; signature estate wines remain the Pinots, Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blanc, and the non-Burgundian Hannibal red blend.
The Pop Up pairs pours with an Overberg-leaning artisan menu: cheeses from makers such as Anysbos, Stonehouse, and Klein River; charcuterie from Richard Bosman; Mardouw olives; Oskar’s bread; biltong and smaller snacks. A large wall installation by mixed-media artist Chris Slabber references Hemel-en-Aarde textures so the harbour room still feels connected to the valley farm. Indoor and outdoor seating is noted in visitor write-ups; the space is described as wheelchair-accessible in EatPlayDrink coverage.
Published hours have conflicted across sources:
Treat hours as confirm-only: call +27 28 312 3515 or email tastingroom@bouchardfinlayson.co.za / info@bouchardfinlayson.co.za. Walk-ins are generally welcomed in tertiary coverage; reservations via the tasting-room email are still wise in peak whale season.
When open, the estate sits in Hemel-en-Aarde with roughly 25 ha of vineyard planned on Burgundian principles and a large fynbos conservancy on the balance of the land (~100 ha conservation context in estate storytelling). Galpin Peak Pinot Noir remains the house icon named for the peak above the property. That story matters for collectors and for understanding why the Pop Up flights are structured as they are—but it does not currently unlock a valley walk-in.
Put Bouchard Finlayson on your Hermanus town / harbour loop, not your Upper Hemel-en-Aarde farm crawl, until reopen. Combine the Pop Up with whale-watching seasons or harbour restaurants, then visit open valley neighbours separately. Ignore any outdated map pin that still implies an open farm tasting room without checking the official place page.
Is the valley cellar door open? No—temporarily closed for transformation; use the Hermanus Pop Up. Where exactly is the Pop Up? Ground floor, Harbour Square Hotel, 5 Harbour Road, Hermanus. When does the estate reopen? Not fixed publicly; tertiary reports suggest into 2027—follow official channels. Can I still taste Galpin Peak / Missionvale? Yes, via Pop Up Legacy-style flights (confirm current list on the day). Published tasting price? Not on the official place HTML checked 2026-10-01—ask staff.
