Belfield Wine Estate: Elgin stay first, tasting only by enquiry

Belfield is a small family wine farm in the heart of the Elgin Valley, about an hour from Cape Town. It is not a walk-in cellar-door destination with published tasting-room hours. The primary public product on the official site is self-catering accommodation—notably Acorn Cottage and The Stables—with wine sales and any tasting handled by prior enquiry. Official site: belfield.co.za.

If your Elgin plan assumes you can turn up for a flight of estate reds between 10 and 16, reset that plan. Belfield rewards overnight guests and people who organise wine contact in advance—not spontaneous route-hoppers.

Kreft family farm: reds on a warmer Elgin slope

The Kreft family bought Belfield in 2000. Against the valley’s fashion for whites and Pinot, they planted red grapes on a warmer north-east facing slope with ironstone and gravel over clay—soils the estate links to tannin structure and drainage. Elgin’s cool climate still stretches ripening; Belfield has long described itself as among the later red harvests in South Africa, chasing balance of flavour, sugar, and acidity.

Mike Kreft made wine from the first vintage in 2005 through 2018, with a vineyard-first philosophy. Mel Kreft leads hospitality; son Allister and daughter Jenna support the next chapter. The farm’s gardens and fynbos lean on the family’s prior protea-farming passion—Magnifica and Aristata wine names reference proteas.

What changed: no on-farm cellar, Aristata continues

The official Wines page is candid. Belfield no longer operates an on-site wine cellar (the former cellar space is now an education studio for Under the Influence). The family stopped making wine at the farm and now continues a small production of Belfield Aristata under the winemaking guidance of Joris at Almenkerk Winery. Other blocks are grown for partner winemakers—examples the family publicly cites include Syrah to Lismore (and related projects), Merlot to 4G, Cabernet Sauvignon as De Trafford Belfield Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc to Radford Dale. A Chardonnay planting (Maggie block) is part of the newer vineyard story.

Implication for visitors: you may still encounter Belfield fruit in serious Cape bottles elsewhere, but you should not expect a classic estate tasting room pouring a full historic Magnifica / Aristata / Syrah flight unless Mel or the wine contact confirms a private arrangement.

Accommodation: Acorn Cottage and The Stables

This is where Belfield is strongest for travellers:

  • Acorn Cottage — one bedroom (double bed), fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower, lounge with fireplace, veranda with braai / fire pit under a large oak, private garden, parking beside the cottage—positioned as a cosy stay for two.
  • The Stables — originally a horse stable, then for about fifteen years the wine tasting room, now refurbished as a unique cottage for two with valley views.

Guests may explore the estate and indigenous fynbos gardens between the vineyards. Dogs are no longer allowed (friendly farm hounds do not welcome visiting canines). Rates are VAT-inclusive and seasonal—use the live booking links on the site rather than third-party guesses.

Bookings: Mel Kreft +27 82 767 9932 / cottages@belfield.co.za. Wine enquiries: alkreft@gmail.com (homepage also lists this for wine). Master CSV still shows mike@belfield.co.za—prefer the live cottage and wine contacts above.

Honest “what not to expect”

  • No published public tasting hours
  • No walk-in cellar door
  • No on-site restaurant on the official visitor narrative
  • No guarantee that Aristata can be tasted the afternoon you arrive

What you can expect as a cottage guest: quiet Elgin mornings, vineyard and garden walks, and a base for day trips to neighbouring farms that do publish tasting hours (Almenkerk, for example, is a natural neighbour for Aristata’s current winemaking home). Confirm any farm-gate wine purchase or tasting when you book the stay.

Practical visit advice

Drive time from Cape Town is typically about an hour via the N2 and Grabouw / Elgin roads—confirm the exact farm pin when Mel sends booking details (directories vary). Pack for cool evenings even in summer. Use Belfield as a sleep-and-explore hub: hike or cycle Elgin routes, taste at open cellar doors, return to the oak-shaded braai. If wine is your only goal and you are not staying over, email alkreft@gmail.com or ask Mel before travelling; if the answer is no tasting that week, choose another Elgin stop rather than arriving disappointed.

Why list Belfield on an Elgin wine map

Belfield still matters as a grower of serious cool-climate red fruit and as one of the valley’s most honest small-farm stays. Listing it as a “tasting venue” without the enquiry caveat would mislead. List it as a farm cottage estate with Aristata by arrangement, and travellers get the right trip.
