Family-Friendly Wine Farms in Franschhoek
38 family friendly wine farms in Franschhoek: Boschendal's Tree House, pump tracks, kids menus, juice pairings, picnics, drive times and attractions.
If you're looking for family friendly wine farms in Franschhoek, start with Boschendal. Its Tree House playground, MTB pump track and Werf picnics with kids baskets make it the strongest family day in the valley. After that, the choice widens: free pump tracks, covered play parks with childminders, kids menus, juice pairings and a rescue sanctuary where children can feed pigs and donkeys. This guide covers 38 audited farms: 11 with a fuller family offer and 27 with a limited one. Bellingham and Franschhoek Cellar share one venue, so they get one entry, which leaves 37 stops. Most are about 45 to 60 minutes from Cape Town without traffic.
We've split the list honestly. Farms with a fuller family offer come first, then farms where children are welcome but the offer is modest, then nearby family attractions.
How we chose these farms
We checked every farm against its own official website in October 2026, and used reputable visitor guides (such as the Franschhoek Wine Tram) to corroborate details where needed. We looked for play areas, kids menus, non-alcoholic tastings, animals, picnics, casual food, lawns and activities.
- Fuller family offer: at least one dedicated kids' feature (play area, kids menu, kids programme or animals) plus space to move.
- Limited family offer: children are welcome and there's something for them, such as a juice pairing, a kids menu at a sit-down restaurant, a picnic or a hike, but no full kids' setup.
Please check before you go. Play equipment gets removed, menus change, and restaurants renovate. Prices were correct when we checked. Our booking guide covers what to ask.
Quick picks by what your kids love

- Allée Bleue, La Motte, Vrede en Lust and Grande Provence: jungle gyms or playgrounds beside lawns and family dining.

- La Bri (limited): every pairing can be served with fruit juice instead of wine.
- Lynx (limited): non-alcoholic chocolate brownie and juice pairing.
- Atlas Swift (limited): Kids Grape & Juicee Cookie Experience per the Wine Tram. Check ahead, because the official site doesn't mention it.

- Mel Wines (limited): watch the family horses graze from the picnic lawns.
Best for picnics and relaxed meals

Farms with a fuller family offer
Boschendal
About 47 min from Cape Town without traffic · boschendal.com
The valley's headline family farm. Kids get the Tree House playground, and older riders can use the MTB pump track (open to visitors, with parental supervision). Werf picnics include a kids basket for ages 3–12 (R250 when we checked; pre-book 24 hours ahead), and the Deli serves breakfast and all-day casual food, including wood-fired pizza. Supervised Tree House holiday programmes run for ages 4–12 (for example, 28 September to 7 October 2026). Horse riding and trails are also on offer, plus a Farm Explorers Passport for in-house guests and the Friday Night Market.
Good to know: cashless farm. Book picnics ahead.
Allée Bleue Estate
About 49 min from Cape Town without traffic · alleebleue.co.za
Herb-garden picnics run Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays, 11:00–17:00 (last collection 14:30). A kids picnic appears only on the Dineplan booking listing, not the official site, so check ahead when you book. A jungle gym and lawn games keep kids busy, and the estate lists clay herb-pot painting for little ones. Wood-fired pizza, a bistro and family-friendly Mill House accommodation complete the offer.
Good to know: picnic booking is essential.
Franschhoek Cellar (with Bellingham Wines)
About 55 min from Cape Town without traffic · franschhoekcellar.co.za
One stop, two names. Bellingham's Homestead, Bernard and Founders ranges are poured here on Huguenot Road. Bellingham has no separate kids cellar door, so don't plan a second Bellingham visit. The cellar has a covered, securely fenced play park with jungle gyms and play houses, with childminders noted. The July 2026 menu lists a full under-12 kiddies menu: platter, burger, pizza, pasta, shakes and boxed juice.
Good to know: walk-ins welcome; cashless.
Grande Provence
About 56 min from Cape Town without traffic · grandeprovence.co.za
The official Bistro page says it's ideal for families, with children playing on the jungle gym or the open grass beside the sculpture garden. The Wine Tram also reports a newer natural playground with a zip line, so confirm that on arrival. Country picnics run from 1 October to 30 April and must be prepaid with 24–48 hours' notice. The Bistro serves burgers, but there's no dedicated kids menu.
Good to know: R100 per person Bistro deposit; not pet-friendly; cashless.
La Motte
About 53 min from Cape Town without traffic · la-motte.com
L'Ami Family Brasserie offers options for children, and the Bakery & Garden Café sits beside oak lawns, a pond and a farmyard-inspired playground. The Spens farm pantry stocks picnic-style foods.
Good to know: the hiking trail isn't recommended for under-10s (no infants in backpacks, no dogs). Bring photo ID for the security check-in; cashless.
Leopard's Leap Family Vineyards
About 53 min from Cape Town without traffic · leopardsleap.co.za
A free dirt bicycle pump track (Wed–Sun; helmets required; bike and helmet rental R50/hour when we checked), plus a jungle gym, lawn and water-channel play beside the outdoor seating. The rotisserie restaurant has a dedicated kiddies menu, with small plates, burgers, pizzas and braaibroodjies served Wed–Sun 11:00–16:00.
Good to know: closed on Christian religious holidays.
Mont Rochelle
About 59 min from Cape Town without traffic · virginlimitededition.com
The Little Corkers programme covers lawn games, a creative corner, mini olympics, family film nights and grape stomping at harvest (January to March). Activities run on request, mostly for hotel guests, and a parent must stay with children. Day visitors can book picnics, tastings and meals, and chefs make child-friendly dishes on request.
Good to know: the Country Kitchen closed for refurbishment from 1 September, and tastings have moved to MIKO. The pool is for hotel guests only. Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds.
Pigcasso (Farm Sanctuary SA)
Area: Franschhoek · about 56 min from Cape Town without traffic · farmsanctuarysa.org
A rescue sanctuary first and a wine stop second. Entry is free (donations welcome), it's open daily and there's no booking. Kids grab a food tray to meet and feed rescued pigs, goats, cows and donkeys. Treat it as a lesson in kindness, not a petting zoo. The art barn still shows work by Pigcasso the painting pig (she died in March 2024), and the Wonki Donkey Deli serves vegan snacks and Swine Wine tastings.
Good to know: the official page shows two sets of hours, so confirm closing time. There's no play area or kids menu.
Rickety Bridge
About 56 min from Cape Town without traffic · ricketybridge.com
The estate calls itself family-friendly, and its winter menu has a kids menu (margherita pizza R85, cheeseburger and chips R95) plus juices and milkshakes. The Wine Tram lists a kiddies pairing. There are lawn games, a 2.5 km vineyard walk and new padel courts.
Good to know: there's no dedicated play area — the official FAQ describes a family-friendly estate with open spaces, so bring a ball rather than expecting a jungle gym. Tastings are 18+, and pets aren't allowed. Walk-ins are welcome, though weekend booking is recommended.
Vrede en Lust
About 41 min from Cape Town without traffic, among the closest farms in this guide · vnl.co.za
Lust Bistro & Bakery serves kiddies menus beside a safe outdoor kids play area next to the gardens, with pizza, breakfast and lunch. Tasting runs Mon–Sun 10:00–17:00.
Good to know: the restaurants and tasting room are pet-friendly on a leash. Cashless.

Children are welcome at these farms, but don't expect a full kids' setup. They work best as a second stop, for older kids, or for a specific experience.

A note on adults-only tasting rooms
Some Franschhoek cellars aren't set up for young children. Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons welcomes children over 12 only at its tasting centre, so we haven't listed it as a family farm. Le Lude, Boekenhoutskloof and Noble Hill (above) also have limits worth knowing before you book.
Sample half-day and full-day plans
Half-day with toddlers
1. Pick one play farm: Franschhoek Cellar, Vrede en Lust (about 41 min), Leopard's Leap or La Motte. 2. Arrive near opening and eat an early lunch within sight of the play area. 3. Head home before nap time. One farm is enough.
Full day with primary-school kids
1. Morning: Boschendal's Tree House and pump track, with a pre-booked Werf picnic. 2. Afternoon: Pigcasso to feed the rescued animals, or Leopard's Leap's pump track. 3. Optional: a juice pairing at La Bri, or the Huguenot Monument gardens for a leg-stretch. 4. Keep it to two stops, three at most, and arrange a sober driver.
Tweens and teens
Try Plaisir de Merle's brunch hike or Vineyard Safari, the Anthonij Rupert Motor Museum, Rickety Bridge's vineyard walk and padel, Wildeberg's trails, or Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve. Alcohol tasting is 18+ only. See SA alcohol age and etiquette.

Practical tips for Franschhoek with kids
- Book picnics and lunches, especially Boschendal, Allée Bleue, Grande Provence and Holden Manz. See our booking guide.
- Carry a card. Boschendal, Franschhoek Cellar, Grande Provence, La Motte, Vrede en Lust and Old Road are cashless.
- Check days and seasons. Leopard's Leap food and the pump track run Wed–Sun, Grande Provence picnics run October to April, and Mont Rochelle's Country Kitchen is closed for refurbishment.
- Confirm unverified play. Old Road's play area, Grande Provence's zip-line playground and Atlas Swift's kids experience need a quick call.
- Check the dog policy. Vrede en Lust, Mont Rochelle, Old Road and Noble Hill welcome dogs. Grande Provence, Rickety Bridge, La Petite Ferme, Plaisir de Merle and La Chataigne don't.
- Watch water. La Chataigne's unfenced river, Paserene's dam and Maison's uncovered pools need close supervision.
- Plan transport with Uber vs self-drive with kids, and match farms to ages with how to choose an age-appropriate wine farm.
- Pack well. See what to pack and safety tips.
