Beyerskloof: Stellenbosch Home of Pinotage on the Bottelary / Koelenhof Route

Beyerskloof is synonymous with South Africa’s heritage grape, Pinotage. Located off Koelenhof Road (R304) in the Bottelary / Koelenhof area of Stellenbosch, this approachable cellar door has become one of the most visited stops on the Stellenbosch wine route for travellers who want to understand Pinotage in all its diversity—from everyday favourites and dry rosé to serious oak-aged expressions that collect Absa Top 10 and international trophies.

Passionate winemaking is a way of life here. Since planting the first vineyards more than thirty years ago, Beyerskloof has grown into one of South Africa’s leading red-wine producers with an unrivalled love for Pinotage—while still telling a story with each wine beyond a single variety. Make yourself at home, fill your glass, and join a journey that helped define modern Cape Pinotage culture.

Overview and history

Within a mere generation, Beyerskloof became the brand most closely identified with Pinotage worldwide. It started with a vineyard planted at a small home farm off the Koelenhof road, bought in 1988. When Beyers Truter dug his hands into the soil to plant the first vines—initially including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—an iconic Stellenbosch story was set in motion. The maiden vintage was known as Beyerskloof 1989.

The first Beyerskloof Pinotage was produced and bottled in 1995, and one year later it won the first of many Absa Top 10 Pinotage awards. Expansion followed: a warehouse and residence rose on the farm, and in 1997 about 100 hectares were acquired in the Bottelary Winelands. Portfolio growth in the early 2000s emphasised quality hand-pressed Pinotage and Cape Blends in oak. In 2003 Beyerskloof won SA Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in the United Kingdom.

Later milestones include the first Pinotage Dry Rosé, a Chenin Blanc/Pinotage white blend, Anri Truter’s Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year win with Diesel Pinotage, the 2018 purchase of roughly 50 hectares known as Kriekbult (visible from the Red Leaf Bistro deck toward Simonsberg), and an International Wine & Spirits Competition trophy for best Pinotage. Restaurant and hospitality areas were upgraded and relaunched, and branding increasingly celebrated the father-and-son identity. Today winemaker Anri Truter builds on Beyers’ legacy while driving innovation in vineyard and cellar.

Terroir and location

Beyerskloof’s vineyards sit in the Bottelary / Koelenhof belt of Stellenbosch—rolling Boland hills with views toward the majestic Simonsberg. The combination of Stellenbosch’s Mediterranean climate, varied Bottelary soils and carefully expanded vineyard holdings gives the team multiple Pinotage and companion-variety sites from which to craft a wide stylistic range.

For wine-route travellers, the R304 Koelenhof location is practical: easy to combine with other northern Stellenbosch and Bottelary estates, yet distinct as “the home of Pinotage” rather than another generic tasting stop on the South Africa wine route.

Signature wines and styles

Pinotage is the heart of the portfolio, presented in styles from fruit-forward and approachable to structured, award-focused bottlings such as Diesel Pinotage. Supporting wines include Cape Blends, Pinotage Dry Rosé, Chenin Blanc/Pinotage, and other reds that tell the Beyerskloof story of South African heritage varieties and modern Stellenbosch craftsmanship.

The tasting room is designed so visitors discover how differently Pinotage can show—an educational and enjoyable experience for newcomers to Cape wine and for collectors chasing Top 10 Pinotage pedigree. Awards and accolades displayed on site and online reinforce why this Bottelary cellar door remains a pilgrimage stop for Pinotage lovers.

Visitor experience

Tasting room: Typically open Monday–Saturday 09:00–16:30 and Sunday 10:00–16:30 (confirm seasonally). Once you visit, the team’s ethos is that you become part of the Beyerskloof family—hospitable, unstuffy and focused on the grape that made the farm famous.

Red Leaf Bistro: Open Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–15:30, the bistro offers one of Stellenbosch’s most memorable casual culinary experiences: calm views across rolling Boland vineyards with great food and Beyerskloof wines. It is ideal for a leisurely lunch on the Bottelary wine route after a Pinotage flight.

The Beyerskloof Cru wine club works through a carefully selected twelve-bottle case: purchase secures twelve months of membership benefits and discounts, renewed by buying another Cru case—a simple way for fans to stay connected after leaving Koelenhof.

Why visit Beyerskloof

  • South Africa’s most celebrated Pinotage destination and brand story
  • Approachable, friendly cellar door—excellent for first-time Stellenbosch visitors
  • Red Leaf Bistro with serene Boland vineyard views
  • Father-and-son Truter winemaking legacy spanning more than three decades
  • Convenient Koelenhof / Bottelary stop on the Stellenbosch wine route

Practical visit tips

Arrive with an appetite for lunch at Red Leaf Bistro and allow time to taste more than one Pinotage style side by side. Weekends can be busy—booking the bistro is wise. Combine Beyerskloof with other Bottelary or northern Stellenbosch farms for a Pinotage-focused day. Location: Beyerskloof, Koelenhof Road, R304, Stellenbosch. Contact +27 21 865 2135 or check beyerskloof.co.za for current hours, Cru membership and seasonal tasting specials.

Pinotage education for Stellenbosch wine-route travellers

Beyerskloof is especially valuable for first-time Cape wine visitors who have heard of Pinotage but never tasted it across styles. A single visit can move from fresh, fruit-led examples to oak-aged flagships such as Diesel, with Cape Blends and Pinotage Dry Rosé filling the middle ground. That range makes the Bottelary / Koelenhof cellar door an efficient classroom as well as a welcoming tasting room.

The Truter father-and-son story—Beyers planting in 1988, Anri carrying innovation forward—gives the brand emotional continuity that guests remember. Views from the Red Leaf Bistro toward Kriekbult and Simonsberg reinforce how vineyard expansion since the 1990s still sits inside a classic Stellenbosch landscape.

If your itinerary is Pinotage-focused, schedule Beyerskloof early enough for a full tasting plus lunch, then continue to other northern Stellenbosch or Bottelary farms. Bring a designated driver or book a wine-route transport service; the R304 access is easy, but afternoon tastings add up quickly on any South Africa wine route day.
