Farms with the most visitor information (opening hours, phone numbers, photos) are listed first.

Stellenbosch is where Cape wine tourism was invented. The 1971 Stellenbosch Wine Route set the template — cellar door, restaurant, mountain backdrop — that the rest of the winelands copied. The district sits in a bowl of Stellenbosch Mountain, Simonsberg, Helderberg and the Bottelary Hills, with False Bay air pushing up the valleys on summer afternoons.

Cabernet Sauvignon built the modern reputation, especially on decomposed granite. Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Shiraz and Bordeaux blends fill out the picture. Wards such as Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch let producers make a more precise origin claim than Stellenbosch alone.

For a visitor, the district is walkable in town and very driveable in a loop: R44 north toward Paarl, Helshoogte toward Franschhoek, Polkadraai toward the coast. WineFarmz lists every mapped Stellenbosch farm with coordinates so you can build a day that is geographically sane rather than a zigzag of famous names.
