Boschendal: Cellar Door, Manor House and Wine & Wander on the Franschhoek gateway

Boschendal is one of the Cape’s landmark estates—founded 1685, sprawling across roughly 1,900 hectares at the Pniel / Groot Drakenstein gateway between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek (Pniel Road / R310). It operates as a full farm destination: two primary wine-tasting venues (The Cellar Door and The Manor House), food-and-wine pairings published in 2026 tasting menus, breakfast canapés, and a premium Saturday Wine & Wander Safari. This page lists only experiences corroborated on boschendal.com and the March 2026 Cellar Door / Manor House tasting PDFs—Boschendal also runs restaurants, picnics, accommodation and farm activities that sit outside this wine-tasting brief.

Phone lines were noted down on the live wine-tasting page at research time; use enquiries@boschendal.co.za / reservations@boschendal.co.za and +27 21 870 4274 as published contacts. The farm is cashless.

Cellar Door wine tasting (daily)

Hours: 09h30–16h30 daily; last seating 16h30; wine sales until 17h30.

Pre-booking and pre-payment secure a table; walk-ins welcome if available. Groups of five or more attract an automatic 10% gratuity.

2026 Cellar Door pairing menu (official PDF)

Pairing price | wine-only price where listed:

  • 1685 Range Chocolate Pairing — 1685 Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Shiraz — R250 | R100
  • Appellation Series Cheese Pairing — Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin Chardonnay, Elgin Pinot Noir, Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon — R400 | R350
  • Taste of Boschendal Charcuterie Pairing — Brut NV, 1685 Sauvignon Blanc, Nicolas, Black Angus — R250 | R200
  • Cap Classique with Saldanha Bay Oyster Tasting — Brut NV, Brut Rosé, Demi Sec, Grande Cuvée — R350 | R200
  • Brandy Chocolate Pairing — 10 Year Potstill Brandy XO — R100

Non-alcoholic kids cordial and grape-juice pairings appear on the same menu for families. Platters (farm bread, snack, charcuterie, cheese) are à la carte alongside flights. Oysters can also be ordered as singles or a plate of ten on the Cellar Door menu—useful if you want bubbly without the full Cap Classique flight.

Breakfast canapés at the Cellar Door

Daily 10:00–11:30, R225 per person, 24-hour advanced booking required. A lighter morning entry if you plan a fuller Manor House or safari afternoon.

Manor House wine tasting

Hours: Mon–Thu, Sat & Sun 09h30–16h30 (last seating 16h30; wine sales to 17h30). Friday 09h30–16h30 with last seating 16h00; Wine Shop & Gift Room open until 21h00 on Fridays.

The March 2026 Manor House PDF mirrors the core chocolate, cheese, charcuterie and Cap Classique–oyster pairings at the same price points, and adds Manor-only dessert focus:

  • Traditional South African Dessert Pairing — Brut NV, Demi Sec, Vin D’Or Noble Late Harvest, 10 Year Potstill Brandy XO — R400
  • Additional brandy / malva / noble late harvest dessert pairings listed on the Manor PDF (confirm live menu when booking)

Choose Manor House for heritage ambience and dessert flights; Cellar Door for the same core pairings in a more cellar-adjacent setting. Friday evenings favour shoppers who want Wine Shop & Gift Room hours after tasting seats close.

Wine & Wander Safari (Saturdays)

A three-hour vineyard safari every Saturday 10:00–13:00 (weather permitting), capped at 9 guests, priced R2,100 per person, with 48-hour pre-booking and payment. Official inclusions:

  • Cap Classique welcome on the Manor House steps
  • Open safari vehicle through Simonsberg slopes, vineyards, orchards and pastures
  • Tasting and artisanal platter at the Viewpoint with sabrage
  • Gift valued at R650
  • Children can use the Tree House at R90/hour while adults taste

Book via Dineplan or reservations. This is the premium “see the farm” wine product—not a substitute for a standard Cellar Door flight. Weather permitting is literal: winter fronts can cancel open-vehicle itineraries, so keep a Cellar Door pairing as backup when booking travel insurance-sensitive weekends.

Signature wines to recognise on the list

Boschendal’s tasting menus showcase the accessible 1685 range, cool-climate Elgin Appellation whites and Pinot Noir, Stellenbosch Cabernet, Cap Classique (Brut NV through Grande Cuvée / Jean Le Long), and icons such as Nicolas and Black Angus, plus Vin D’Or and potstill brandy. That spread lets one estate cover bubbly, Bordeaux/Rhône-leaning reds, and dessert without inventing off-menu rarities. Manor House vintage lists may show library Elgin Pinot Noir and older reds at elevated bottle prices—ask rather than assuming every vintage on a PDF is still in stock.

Planning tips

Book Cellar Door or Manor House pairings online before weekend valley traffic; treat Wine & Wander as a dedicated Saturday morning. Confirm current phone/email status if lines are down. Combine with Franschhoek village lunch only after accounting for the drive from Pniel—Boschendal is a gateway estate, not a Huguenot Road shopfront. Cashless means cards or accepted digital tenders only—carry a backup card for the Wine Shop after tasting.

Why Boschendal stays high on Franschhoek itineraries

Scale, two tasting rooms, published 2026 pairing prices, and a safari that actually maps the 1,900 ha farm. Stick to verified offers above; ignore third-party lists that invent picnic SKUs or outdated tram-only packages without a live boschendal.com anchor. For portal readers comparing Franschhoek “big estates,” Boschendal’s advantage is transparent menus and dual venues—not another vague promise of “award-winning hospitality.”
