Boutique cellar on a Helderberg hill

Grangehurst Winery is a family-owned boutique cellar on the slopes of the Helderberg between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, reached via Eikendal Road off the R44. Proprietor-winemaker Jeremy Walker started the business in 1992, buying in quality grapes and converting the property’s squash court into a working cellar. The house motto — Handcrafted – Traditional – Unhurried — is more than marketing: wines are built for long maturation, clarified largely by settling and racking, and filtered only at bottling in the classic Grangehurst method.

The name itself is a family tribute. Eddie and Betty Walker’s English childhood homes — “The Grange” and “Hurst Close” — combine into Grangehurst: a country house with outbuildings, on a hill. Eddie and Betty moved from Camps Bay to the Stellenbosch smallholding in 1973, building tennis and squash courts that later gave way to trees, the winery and today’s tasting pavilion. Sporting life and cellar life literally share the same footprint of land.

Fruit sources and Sunset Vineyard

Early on, purchasing grapes (rather than owning vineyards) was still unusual for individual Cape winemakers; Jeremy cites encouragement from friend Neil Ellis. In 2000, in partnership with Dr John Hill, they bought a 13-hectare Stellenbosch farm renamed Sunset Vineyard, planting about six hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon after soil prep (from the 2005 vintage onward as a core Cabernet source). Other components — Pinotage, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Roobernet — continue to come from prime Stellenbosch and Helderberg parcels. Vine ages in use are often cited around 12–25 years, as bush vines and trellised blocks on soils ranging from Firgrove sands and gravels to Helderberg Hutton/Clovelly and deeper Tukulu/Oakleaf profiles at Sunset.

False Bay’s southerly summer breezes are part of the quality story for Helderberg fruit — a cool influence that helps keep structure in reds destined for long bottle age.

The wine range

Focus is handcrafted reds and a dry Cape Rosé, with a white also bottled and labelled for tasting flights. Signature and regularly poured wines include:

  • Cape Rosé
  • Pinotage (often shown as mature vintages in flights)
  • Nikela — Cape Blend tribute to Eddie and Betty; e.g. 2014 published as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz and Roobernet; long French-oak maturation; Nguni word meaning a gift of dedication/respect to ancestors
  • Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot
  • Grangehurst flagship red
  • “M” Chenin Blanc and The Gap / Daylea Red appearances on current tasting menus

Expect deep colour, cedar/mocha/berry complexity on the better reds, and drink windows that can stretch many years from vintage when cellared well. Fact sheets for Nikela have noted Platter nominations and long recommended drinking horizons — ask which mature bottles are open that week.

The Pavilion tasting venue

The tasting venue evolved from Eddie’s old Tennis Pavilion (itself converted from a mushroom shed). The New Pavilion now holds offices, wine store and a private tasting room downstairs, with the main tasting space upstairs and outdoor patio on half of the former tennis court. Views sweep from Cape Point toward Table Mountain — a Helderberg panorama that matches the unhurried pour.

Published tasting options (confirm live prices on grangehurst.co.za):

  • Handcrafted — R150 pp — e.g. “M” Chenin Blanc, Cape Rosé, The Gap NV, Daylea Red, Pinotage
  • Traditional — R250 pp — Cape Rosé, Pinotage, Nikela, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Grangehurst
  • Unhurried — SQ — vinothèque / special events via social media

Flights include olives, dried fruit, crackers and still water. Cheese/charcuterie platters (pre-order) and snack bowls are available.

Hours (wine-tasting page): Tuesday–Saturday 11:00–17:00; closed Sunday–Monday. Public holidays generally open for sales/tastings (phone to confirm); closed Good Friday, 25–26 Dec and New Year’s Day. Bookings recommended: sales@grangehurst.co.za | +27 (0)21 855 3625.

Cottages

Three self-catering cottages on the property make Grangehurst a return destination for overnight guests who want Helderberg calm with cellar-door access. Ask sales about cottage availability when booking tastings — many guests come back year after year according to the estate’s own hospitality notes.

Helderberg itinerary fit

Ideal for travellers who prefer mature, traditional reds over flashy new releases, and a pavilion view over a food-court vibe. Pair with Eikendal Road / R44 Helderberg neighbours, then continue toward Somerset West or Stellenbosch town. Allow time — “unhurried” is the point. If you collect Cape Blends, make Nikela the centrepiece of the Traditional flight.
