Elgin · Western Cape
Goedvertrouw Wine Estate is a wine farm in Elgin, Western Cape. About 77 km from Cape Town.
Goedvertrouw Wine Estate sits about 9 km from the village of Botrivier on the scenic Van der Stel Pass, in the wider Walker Bay / Bot River wine country between the Overberg and the coast. It is a small, working organic farm run by Elreda Pillmann, known for hand-bottled wines, homemade meals by arrangement, and intimate stays in a restored Cape Dutch homestead. There is no polished walk-in tourism machine here—visits work best when you phone ahead. Primary contact: +27 28 284 9769 · email commonly listed as goedvertrouw@breede.co.za. Official web presence is thin; rely on the phone number and Bot River Wine Route listings rather than an elaborate cellar-door site.
The farm occupies a photographer-friendly fold of the pass landscape: banks of the Bot River, fynbos and protea on mountain slopes, and an English country garden in front of the main building. Listings place it within the Groenlandberg Conservancy context, emphasising peace, birdlife, and old-world hospitality rather than packed tasting bays. Latitude/longitude published on the Bot River Wine Route page: approximately -34.16491, 19.223943. From Botrivier, follow Van der Stel Pass toward Villiersdorp; the estate is a gravel-route favourite for cyclists who treat the pass as a recreational corridor.
According to the Bot River Wine Route’s published estate history, the present owners acquired Goedvertrouw from Petrus Johannes Fourie in November 1984. Arthur Henry Pillmann, a retired mechanical engineer, and his wife Elreda settled with the aim of building a life that included Arthur’s passion for winegrowing. They ripped virgin sandstone on a steep eastern slope to plant Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, later adding a further shale parcel. First harvests are dated to the summer of 1988, with Wine Estate registration in 1989. Arthur died in November 2002; Elreda has continued vineyards and farm life with a small team. That story should stay as published history—not as invented awards or tourism slogans.
Wine tasting is by appointment. The Bot River Wine Route and regional listings agree: stop for a drink if welcomed, but prior arrangement is the right etiquette. Tastings are intimate—veranda or cosy tasting room—centred on small-scale, hand-bottled wines rather than a long commercial flight menu. Varieties historically planted and commonly associated with the farm include Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (with Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc also named in the route history). Do not invent current SKUs, scores, or Méthode Cap Classique labels unless confirmed directly with the farm when you book; production is boutique and can change with the season.
Phone +27 28 284 9769 (or email the address above) before you leave Hermanus, Caledon, or Cape Town. Walk-in expectations that work at large Hemel-en-Aarde cellar doors do not apply here.
Meals are a core part of the Goedvertrouw reputation, but they are not a drop-in restaurant. Sources consistently advise arranging meals in advance. In summer, lunch may be served on the stoep; in winter, the tasting room or lounge is the warm gathering place. Regional write-ups describe farm-churned butter, freshly baked bread, and home-cooked food using garden ingredients—exactly the kind of hospitality that depends on notice so Elreda can prepare. Treat dining as a booked farm experience, not a café stop.
Accommodation is offered in the restored 1825 Cape Dutch homestead setting:
Guests may enjoy farm walks, mountain slopes, dams (where swimming is allowed), cycling links along the pass, and abundant birdlife. The atmosphere is working-farm and personal, shaped by Elreda’s long stewardship of the place she and Arthur built together.
Pair Goedvertrouw with other Bot River and Walker Bay stops only after your appointment is confirmed. Typical day-trip geography: Cape Town via the N2 and Houwhoek, then Botrivier and the pass; Hermanus and Hemel-en-Aarde lie south-east if you are already on a whale-coast wine circuit. Because hours are appointment-based rather than fixed Mon–Sat boards, build buffer time and keep a backup open cellar door for the same afternoon.
Practical checklist:
Walker Bay guides rightly spotlight Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot and Chardonnay icons, but Bot River’s Van der Stel Pass farms add a different register: organic smallholdings, personal hosts, and stays that feel like visiting a living Cape Dutch farm rather than a visitor centre. Goedvertrouw is that register distilled—appointment tasting, meals by arrangement, B&B and School House lodging, Pinot and Chardonnay roots planted for a family dream that Elreda still carries. For the latest availability, skip thin third-party hour tables and go straight to the phone.
