Miles Mossop Wines: Stellenbosch family brand, not a public cellar door

Miles Mossop Wines is a family wine business established in 2004 by winemaker–viticulturist Miles Mossop and his wife Samantha. The official site presents a clear philosophy: source grapes from exceptional Western Cape vineyards, pick at the right moment, and guide fruit through low-intervention winemaking toward expressive, individual bottles Miles himself wants to drink.

Portal geography often pins the brand under Greater Simonsberg because of Miles's long association with Tokara on the Simonsberg side of Stellenbosch. That history is real—and important—but it must not be confused with a Miles Mossop public tasting room on Simonsberg today.

Cellar door vs partners: verify carefully

Official reality (milesmossopwines.com / .co.za):

  • The website is a brand, shop, news, and distribution hub
  • Contact Us invites enquiries about the wines or becoming a distributor—phone +27 66 275 9637, email office@milesmossopwines.com
  • There is no published visit page, tasting fee, flight menu, or cellar-door opening hours on the official site as of 2026 research
  • National and international distributor lists (Western Cape via Morvino / wineorder.co.za, Gauteng, KZN, export partners, etc.) are the intended path to bottles

What not to invent:

  • Do not list Tokara's tasting lounge as the Miles Mossop cellar door. Miles was appointed at Tokara in 2000, made wine there for about nineteen harvests, and left Tokara in May 2018 to focus 100% on his own brand (official About page)
  • Older Wined copy saying "by appointment" is not treated here as a current verified public experience—the official site does not market farm visits
  • Pop-up tastings at retailers (e.g. Johannesburg wine bars) happen occasionally as trade/consumer events; they are not a Stellenbosch estate appointment product

If a private tasting is ever arranged, it would be an ad hoc enquiry—ask the office, and expect the answer may simply be "buy via stockists."

Winemaker background (verified official narrative)

Miles is the son of Kathy and the late Tony Mossop, a Cape Wine Master and noted South African wine authority. After a BSc in Geology (terroir literacy) he completed Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University, graduating top of class in 1998. Harvest work with Gyles Webb at Thelema and Eben Sadie at Spice Route, plus stages at Knappstein (Clare Valley), Far Niente (Napa), and Planeta (Sicily), preceded the Tokara appointment under GT Ferreira.

He married Samantha Fuchs in 2001. The couple launched Miles Mossop Wines in 2004 while he was still full-time at Tokara. Nomination to the Cape Winemakers Guild came in 2012; he served as Guild Chairman 2016–2017.

The wine ranges

Official wines page structures the story in chapters:

The Introduction

Fruit-forward, fresh wines with complexity and site sense; minimal intervention and no new wood, to keep varietal and terroir character. Examples: Introduction Red (Cabernet Sauvignon–based with Cinsault and Merlot; older barrels up to ~16 months) and Introduction Chenin Blanc (older barrels, steel, and concrete up to ~8 months).

The Chapters

Single-varietal, terroir-driven limited releases from chosen sites—often older vines on poorer soils. Published examples include Swartland Cinsault (1998 bush vines, decomposed granite; concrete egg maturation), Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc from certified old bush vines in Bottelary on Malmesbury shale, and Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon from a Polkadraai decomposed-granite vineyard.

The Family (flagship)

Named for family members: Saskia (Cape-style white blend based on old-vine Chenin); Max (Stellenbosch Bordeaux-style blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon); Kika (Chenin Blanc Noble Late Harvest); Sam (Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon pinnacle); Tony's Cape Vintage Reserve (fortified Touriga Nacional honouring Miles's father).

Production is intentionally limited—official About text cites about 80 tons total, yielding roughly 1,800 cases of white and 2,200 of red plus a little dessert wine (figures may shift by vintage).

Sense of place without a farm gate

Because fruit is sourced across the Western Cape, Miles Mossop Wines is best understood as a site-driven family négociant-grower brand rather than a single-hill tourist estate. Bottelary old-vine Chenin in the Chapters range, Swartland Cinsault, and Stellenbosch Cabernet parcels each tell different geological stories—geology Miles studied formally before oenology. That multi-site model is why a single Greater Simonsberg pin on a map can mislead itinerary planners.

How to experience the wines on a Cape itinerary

1. Order via milesmossopwines.com or ask Western Cape stockists listed under Distribution 2. Taste Introduction and Chapters wines at specialist merchants or restaurant lists rather than expecting a Simonsberg gate 3. Keep Greater Simonsberg days for estates that do publish cellar doors (Tokara and neighbours)—enjoy Mossop bottles at dinner instead 4. For trade allocation, use the official distributor contacts—not a tourist booking form that does not exist 5. Follow official news/releases for limited Chapters drops—many sell through the online shop quickly
