Stellenbosch Vineyards is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 34 km from Cape Town.
Stellenbosch Vineyards is one of South Africa’s major packaged-wine producers and exporters, headquartered on historic Welmoed Farm on the R310 Baden Powell Drive at Lynedoch, Stellenbosch. Welmoed ranks among the earliest proclaimed Stellenbosch farms: in 1690 Governor Simon van der Stel of the VOC granted the land to Henning Huysing. Ownership passed through Jakobus van der Heyden (1696), a friend of Huysing who later clashed with Governor Adriaan van der Stel’s administration; the van der Bijl family from 1779, who enlarged the farm and built the old cellar, graveyard and several lasting structures; an 1831 division that left the present Welmoed with Pieter Voltelen van der Bijl; and twentieth-century commercial phases under Rudolph Levin Kramer’s Castle of Wine and Brandy Company, which sold wine “on the reef” and later enabled surrounding farmers to organise around the cellar.
In 1941 eight farmers established Welmoed Koöperatiewe Wynkelders Beperk. Corporate evolution continued with the 2004 merger of Stellenbosch Vineyards and Vinfruco into The Company of Wine People, a 2013 return to the Stellenbosch Vineyards name and corporate identity, and a 2016 relaunch of the Stellenbosch Vineyards Collection of Fine Wines. In July 2018 French group AdVini acquired a majority share, linking the Stellenbosch site into an international wine network. Tragedy struck on 23 October 2018 when fire destroyed a large warehouse holding more than three million bottles; on 5 March 2020 a brand-new logistics hub was inaugurated with shareholders and the French Ambassador present. Through those chapters the company has remained Stellenbosch-rooted while exporting the lion’s share of volume—about 85%—to FMCG and wine-trade customers worldwide.
The published house philosophy is deliberately modest: work with dedicated viticulturists and an elite grower group to source excellent fruit; craft with devotion, passion and a gentle hand so vineyard potential shows; and refuse to release wine that fails internal quality standards. That triad explains why the portfolio spans lifestyle brands and tightly curated Flagship or Limited Release bottles under one roof.
Stellenbosch Vineyards holds memberships with SALBA, WIETA, WOSA and ARA, follows IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) criteria, and is Fairtrade certified, with FSSC 22000 among food-safety credentials. These badges matter for supermarket buyers, hospitality groups and export partners who audit ethical and production standards as carefully as tasting notes.
Stellenbosch Vineyards markets a tiered portfolio rather than a single farm label—useful for visitors who may know Arniston Bay from a shelf but not realise Welmoed is the historic home base:
Older trade literature also references Versus, Kumkani, Four Secrets and Infiniti; confirm current SKUs on stellenboschvineyards.co.za before ordering or listing wines for a tasting itinerary. Harvest updates (including an early 2026 start in mid-January) show how vintage timing can shift cellar messaging year to year, including young-winemaker recognition stories that highlight cellar culture.
The official Visit Us page positions the cellar door for wine sales and online-order collections, with picturesque Helderberg mountain views from the Lynedoch site. That is a different visitor proposition from a full restaurant-and-pairing tourist farm—plan accordingly.

Older third-party tasting menus describing Standard, Premium, Flagship and chocolate pairings with weekend hours may no longer match walk-in reality. Phone ahead if you want a guided tasting rather than retail collection, and do not arrive on a weekend expecting an open door under the current official schedule.
Choose Stellenbosch Vineyards when you need export-scale Stellenbosch brands, Welmoed heritage storytelling, Credo or Flagship exploration, or weekday cellar-door purchases on the R310 between the N2 and Stellenbosch. It pairs naturally with a Vlottenburg stop (for example Stellenbosch Hills) on the same south-western loop. Ask for Credo or Flagship/Limited Release if you want the premium Collection story; Welmoed and Arniston Bay suit gifts, braais and everyday drinking; Infusions suit low-alcohol social occasions. Fairtrade and IPW credentials help corporate and hospitality buyers justify listings.
Tips: bring order numbers for online collections; confirm stock of Limited Release SKUs before travelling specifically for them; use the weekday window; and treat Lynedoch as a logistics-and-heritage stop rather than an all-day leisure campus unless a special event is advertised.

AdVini has held a majority share since 2018, alongside other shareholders in the Stellenbosch Vineyards business.
Official cellar-door hours list weekdays only for sales and collections; confirm any special tasting events directly with the winery before planning a weekend visit.
Official visit-us page: cellar door open for wine sales and online order collections with Helderberg Mountain views. Structured tasting flights/prices are NOT currently published on stellenboschvineyards.co.za/visit-us/ as of 2026-09-07. Third-party wine.co.za listing (Standard R50 / Premium R80 / Flagship R120 / Chocolate R100) and older weekend hours conflict with official Mon–Fri-only hours — treated as unverified; contact winery to confirm current tasting offerings.
