Stonewall Wines: Historic Helderberg Cellar at Happy Vale

Stonewall Wines is the boutique label of Happy Vale farm at the foot of Helderberg mountain near Somerset West, on the R44 corridor between Stellenbosch and the coast. The brand takes its name from the historic ringmuur—the low stone wall ringing the farmyard—while the cellar itself dates to 1828, making architectural heritage as much a reason to visit as the Cabernet, Rubèr blend and Chardonnay. Tasting and sales are by appointment only, which keeps the experience personal and protects a working Helderberg agricultural unit from unscheduled coach traffic.

History

Land for what became Happy Vale was deducted from adjoining Scholtzenhof and granted to Daniel Wouter Malan in 1824. Malan built the wine cellar; his initials and the date 1828 sit below the elegant late-neoclassical gable, decorated with plaster stars, swags, crescent moon and urn-topped pilasters. The L-shaped Cape Georgian homestead carries an 1853 gable date—British colonial Cape detailing rather than earlier VOC Baroque. In 1873 the De Waal family bought the farm and renamed it from the stern Verdruk Mij Niet (“Don’t oppress me”) to the cheerier Happy Vale.

De Waal Koch—grandson of owner Koos De Waal’s brother—took over in 1984 as fourth-generation farmer and today works alongside his son, also De Waal. In 1997 the family began bottling under the Stonewall label, named for that encircling farmyard wall. Only about 10 percent of the crop is crafted, bottled and labelled on the farm; the majority of grapes still go to a commercial Stellenbosch cellar (historically Distell), while roughly 50 tons are processed annually for the Stonewall programme, much of it for export, with the rest sold from the farm and to selected restaurants and shops. That dual economy—bulk grapes plus a tiny branded cut—explains both the scarcity of Stonewall bottles and the working-farm feel of a visit.

Wines and terroir

Happy Vale is an agricultural unit of about 90 hectares, with roughly 70 hectares under vine, in the Helderberg division of the greater Stellenbosch Wine Route. Maritime False Bay influence and Helderberg foothill aspects shape structured reds and fresh whites. The boutique range highlighted on the official vineyards page includes:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon (multiple vintages documented on the site)
  • Rubèr — Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc / Merlot blend
  • Chardonnay
  • Felice — a single-barrel fortified Merlot showcased since 2006
  • Second-label Druk Mij Niet Cabernet Sauvignon (echoing the farm’s older name)

The 1828 cellar still uses temperature-controlled open-top cement fermenters (kuipe) that need manual punch-downs, alongside stainless capacity added in a 1996 update (about 150 tons processing capacity and roughly 100 barrels for maturation). Farm and winery carry IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) compliance under South Africa’s liquor-products scheme. Vintage pages for Cabernet, Rubèr and Felice give estate tasting notes—ask which bottles are open for your appointment rather than assuming every listed year is pourable.

Visiting

Official contact policy is unambiguous: tasting and sales by appointment only, within Monday–Friday 10:00–17:00 and Saturday 10:00–13:00. Those windows are booking slots, not walk-in hours. Secondary sources have long described tastings in converted stables that retain an original trough—charming when available, but confirm the current tasting venue when you book.

Beyond wine, the estate publishes Events (host your gathering on the farm—enquire via the contact form) and Guest Rooms, including a Wine Farm Cottage (enquire on +27 83 700 0856) and a Stonewall Guest Suite. Accommodation is separate from the tasting booking; say if you want both. Directions from Cape Town: N2 toward Somerset West, left at R44 Stellenbosch / Broadway Boulevard, continue on the R44 about 6 km—Stonewall is on the left. GPS on the contact page: S 34°1'59.0" E 018°49'14.6".

For Helderberg itineraries, Stonewall pairs naturally with other Somerset West–R44 or Winery Road stops: close enough for a same-day loop, quiet enough that an appointment feels like a private farm call. Ask whether the historic cellar forms part of the visit and whether Felice is available—fortified Merlot is a distinctive talking point when a barrel has been bottled.

Practical tips

  • Book: Tel +27 21 855 3675; cell 083 310 2407 or 083 527 7778; email stonewall@mweb.co.za. Official URL: https://stonewallwines.co.za/contact/
  • Hours window ≠ walk-in. The Mon–Sat slots are appointment windows only.
  • Stay or celebrate: Use guest-room and events pages for overnight or function requests; do not assume a full restaurant unless confirmed.
  • Export vs cellar door: Much of the wine is export-oriented—buying on the farm may be your best chance at specific vintages.
  • Itinerary fit: Helderberg / R44 day; allow time from Stellenbosch town or False Bay.
  • Website: Prefer https://stonewallwines.co.za/ over generic wine-route portals that omit booking rules.

Why visit

Stonewall combines a genuine 1828 Helderberg cellar, multi-generation De Waal–Koch farming, and a tight, export-quality range anchored by Cabernet and the Rubèr blend. Appointment-only tasting suits travellers who prefer conversation over queues, and optional cottage stays or farm events let you linger inside the ringmuur after the last pour—heritage architecture and boutique bottles in one Helderberg stop.
