High Helderberg wines with False Bay views

Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards sits off Annandale Road on the slopes of the Helderberg, in Stellenbosch’s prized mountain amphitheatre sometimes called the Golden Triangle. Uva is Latin for grape; Mira means wonderful / worthy of admiration — and also nods to the variable star Mira that appears in estate storytelling and labels. Vineyards climb toward roughly 620 metres above sea level, only about 9 km from the Atlantic at False Bay, with sightlines across False Bay, Table Bay and Table Mountain on clear days. Cool maritime air, decomposed granite soils, surrounding fynbos and high elevation underpin an elegant, mineral style that the estate wants visitors to taste in situ.

This is a Helderberg destination, not a Bottelary Hills cellar. The drive up Annandale Road feels steeper and more mountain-bound than valley-floor Stellenbosch farms — plan transport carefully; the estate itself notes that Uber is unreliable, especially for return trips.

History and ownership

Industrialist Desmond (Des) Weedon established the modern Uva Mira project in the late 1990s (the name dates from about 1994 via grandson Derrick Weedon), with early vines and first commercial wines emerging into the early 2000s (first sales often cited around 2004). Mid-2014, Toby Venter — CEO of Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini in South Africa and owner of Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit — acquired the property after searching for a Cape retreat. Venter’s father studied at Stellenbosch University and passed on a love of fine wine; the new owner’s luxury-brand discipline now shapes vineyard, packaging and hospitality standards.

Winemaker Christiaan Coetzee (associated with the cellar since about 2013 in published profiles) and viticulturist teams emphasise precision farming on hard, gritty Helderberg granite: careful irrigation, leaf-roll vigilance and as-natural-as-practical canopy and pest management beside wild fynbos. Of a larger mountain property (figures around ~127 ha land / roughly 27–30 ha under vine appear in secondary profiles), only a focused planted core carries the Uva Mira label — estate fruit only, no bought-in bulk story. Conservation and precision-agriculture projects beyond the vine are also part of the modern Uva Mira narrative.

Wine collections

Two tasting-led collections organise the cellar door:

  • The Mira Collection — the accessible flagship six-wine set that most visitors start with; styles commonly span Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay expressions, Cabernet Franc, Merlot / Shiraz and Bordeaux-leaning reds depending on vintage release.
  • The Icon Collection — limited, higher-tier bottles that carry the estate’s most ambitious statements (Icon Chardonnay is a frequent critic focus).

Cultivar DNA on the mountain leans Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and especially Cabernet Franc — Helderberg sites that Coetzee and viticulturist commentary often flag as world-class Franc country when elevation, granite and sea breeze align. Expect elegance, freshness, minerality and longevity as the golden thread rather than heavy, extracted show wines. Multiple Chardonnay bottlings have historically shown how the same mountain can yield distinct white personalities as vines mature.

Helderberg itinerary fit

Anchor a Helderberg / Annandale day here for views and Franc/Chardonnay depth, then continue toward neighbouring mountain or lower-slope estates. Photographers and view-chasers should aim for clear winter or early-summer mornings when False Bay and Table Mountain both read sharply. Collectors: book the Icon flight when available; Franc devotees should specifically request The Cabernet Franc Experience and ask which vineyard blocks fed the pour.

Visit tips

  • Reserve tasting tables — seating is limited relative to demand
  • Arrange a dedicated driver or rental car; do not rely on rideshare for the return
  • Match flight price (R350 / R550 / R700) to how many other cellars remain that day
  • Add the cheese board if you are not planning a full restaurant stop nearby
  • Ask staff which Icon Chardonnay or Cabernet Franc vintages are pouring
  • Allow extra drive time on steep Annandale approaches after rain
