Vilafonté is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 39 km from Cape Town.
Vilafonté (farm_id vilafont) is a luxury South African wine brand built to compete with the world’s investment-grade reds. The name comes from vilafontes — one of the oldest documented soil types on earth, aged roughly 750,000 to 1.5 million years, never reset by glaciation or volcanism. Pre-Stone Age tools linked to Homo ergaster have been associated with this landscape. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec are planted at high density on low-potential gravelly clay, forcing small berries and concentrated fruit that Dr Phil Freese famously called vineyards “different by design.”
Although the vineyard heartland is the Paarl–Simonsberg side of that ancient soil belt, visitor contact and cellar-door appointments are published at Unit 7C, Distillery Road, Bosman’s Crossing, Stellenbosch — so itinerary planners usually treat Vilafonté as a Stellenbosch appointment brand with Paarl terroir in the bottle.
Vilafonté began as a pioneering US–South African joint venture around 2001 (planting / project roots often cited from the late 1990s; first wines early 2000s). Partners:
The dream was never a high-volume Stellenbosch tourist farm; it was a single-minded pursuit of African terroir wines that could stand with the greatest international bottles.
As the vineyard matured, Zelma Long discerned two equally serious expressions instead of one flagship — hence the Series duo — plus a classic Bordeaux “second wine”:
1. Series C — Cabernet Sauvignon–led, Left Bank / Médoc-leaning structure, longer ageing potential; smallest production among the trio (often cited around ~45 barrels) 2. Series M — Merlot-led Right Bank–style blend with Malbec richness and Cabernet backbone; sensual texture, compelling young yet age-worthy 3. Seriously Old Dirt — introduced 2012 as the earlier-drinking, Cabernet-led blend honouring the ancient soils (typically Cabernet with Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc; ~18 months French oak)
Members receive Series M and Series C allocations on staggered South African shipping calendars (commonly April / November messaging on the members page), with 20% cellar-door discounts and complimentary local delivery on club tiers of three, six or twelve bottles per release.
Vilafonté judges itself against the international investment-grade market: pedigree, desirability and a track record of holding or gaining value matter as much as tasting-room scores. Limited vineyard production and member-first allocation keep Series C and Series M scarce. Textured labels that echo the soil profile reinforce the brand’s “seriously old dirt” mythology without turning the story into gimmick. For South African travellers, an appointment at Distillery Road is often the closest cellar-door window onto wines more frequently discussed in export markets and auction circles than on walk-in Stellenbosch terrace routes.
There is no published walk-in tasting menu or public price list on vilafonte.com. Experiences are by appointment:

Dress and tone skew smart-casual / collector; expect conversation about soils, blending philosophy and cellar ageing rather than a casual six-wine counter flight.
Book Vilafonté as a focused premium appointment in a Stellenbosch town / Distillery Road cluster day, then drive separately if you arrange any vineyard walk on the Paarl–Simonsberg plantings. Pair intellectually with other Bordeaux-blend specialists; do not schedule it as a spontaneous Bottelary or Helderberg terrace stop. International collectors often join the club for allocation access before chasing cellar visits.
Both, practically: ancient vilafontes vineyard soils on the Paarl–Simonsberg side; appointment tasting address in Stellenbosch (Distillery Road).
Seriously Old Dirt for an earlier introduction; Series M and Series C for the full dual-flagship story.
No — contact the winery for a booked visit; members enjoy complimentary structured visits.
