Mont du Toit Kelder: Hawequa foothills mega-reds by appointment

Mont du Toit Kelder produces structured red blends and selected whites from roughly 22 hectares at the foot of the Hawequa mountain overlooking Wellington—about 65 km north-northeast of Cape Town. Official About pages frame a du Toit wine-farming tradition stretching more than 300 years in the Cape, with Huguenot roots near Wellington from 1691. Current steward Stephan du Toit has held Mont du Toit since 1996. German mentors Bernd Philippi and the late Bernhard Breuer helped plan vineyards and a gravity-fed cellar; veteran winemaker Philip Costandius now supervises winemaking. First vintage 1998 drew early international notice; labels use French names honouring Huguenot forebears and a Khoi figure on Hawequas-themed branding.

This farm_id is primarily Wellington (Wined Wellington / Hawequa foothills)—not a Tulbagh cellar door. Seed address “Off Blouvlei Road / Blouvlei Street” matches official directions: turn into Blouvlei Street, then via Generaal Hertzog Boulevard to a discrete sand-road entrance about 2 km on. Watch carefully for that turnoff; official directions warn it is easy to miss.

Visits and tasting tariffs (official)

Official Contact / Visits to the farm block:

  • Opening times: weekdays 10:00–16:30
  • Wine tastings by appointment only — email kelder@montdutoit.co.za
  • Two ranges offered for tasting, each at R75 per person

That published R75/range fee is one of the clearer Wellington tariff lines in this batch—still book ahead; do not treat it as a walk-in guarantee. Wine in the Cape directory wording mentions walking / vineyard / cellar tours as extensions of the pre-booked tasting—confirm preferences with kelder@ when you arrange the visit. There is no restaurant, stay, picnic, or spa product on checked official sources. Bring your own picnic expectations elsewhere on the Wellington route if you need a lunch stop after the appointment.

Vineyard, cellar, olive oil and honey

North and northwest granite / Clovelly–Hutton slopes with sandy loam lower down carry mainly red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot, Tinta Barocca, plus a small Viognier block. Philosophy emphasises low yields, green harvesting at veraison, hand selection, extended maceration, gravity movement into mainly French oak, and up to ~20 months underground maturation in a vaulted, cooled cellar. Special features on the About page include a stainless cooling plant, backup power for load-shedding, traditional basket pressing, and a production cellar built into a slope for gravity flow. The estate subscribes to IPW and cites WIETA ethical certification.

Shop pages list wines such as Le Sommet, Cuvée Du Mas, Les Coteaux Cabernet / Merlot, La Colline Viognier and Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé, plus estate extra virgin olive oil (500 ml and 1 L gift formats) and Les Abeilles honey from partner beekeeper Albertus Buckle—bottle prices on the shop change; quote live shop figures at purchase time rather than memorised rands from an older scrape. Planning the appointment

Email kelder@montdutoit.co.za with preferred weekday morning or afternoon inside 10:00–16:30, party size, and whether you want the two R75 ranges plus any olive oil / honey add-ons. Pair with Blouvlei neighbours (e.g. Alkmaar) only after separate bookings. No Sunday walk-in product is published on the official Visits block. Allow buffer time for the sand-road approach and for lingering with mega-red styles that reward slow tasting rather than a rushed flight.
