Easy Winelands Day Trips with Kids from Cape Town
Seven easy Winelands day trips with kids from Cape Town, from Constantia to Benguela Cove: verified family farms, drive times and nearby attractions.
Planning a day trip to the Winelands with kids from Cape Town? The good news is that the best family wine farms are closer than many people think. Constantia and Durbanville are about 22 to 33 minutes from the city centre without traffic, most of Stellenbosch's family favourites are 30 to 50 minutes away, and the Paarl and Franschhoek valleys take about 40 to 55 minutes. That means you can leave after breakfast, have a proper play-and-lunch day and be home for bath time.
Below are seven easy day trips, grouped by distance, each built around farms that scored well in our October 2026 family audit of more than 650 Western Cape wine farms. Every amenity mentioned was checked against official sources, and every drive time is phrased as "without traffic" — weekday peak hour and Sunday afternoon N1/N2 traffic can add a lot.
How to choose your day trip
- Toddlers or a short attention span? Stay under 30 minutes (Constantia or Durbanville) and plan one farm.
- Mixed ages? Stellenbosch has the most variety: animals, water play, bike parks and supervised kids' clubs.
- A big-day-out feel? The Paarl–Franschhoek valley has three perfect-score farms within about 41–52 minutes.
- A weekend or long-day treat? Walker Bay's Benguela Cove is about 82 minutes away and pairs well with Hermanus.
Please check before you go. Book picnics and weekend tables, confirm opening days (several farms close Mondays or Sundays), and check seasonal closures. Our booking guide has a checklist.
Under 30 minutes
Day trip 1: Constantia — ducks, bikes and Kirstenbosch
About 22–24 min from Cape Town without traffic
Start at Groot Constantia (about 24 min): feed the ducks at the pond, let the kids roam the lawns and explore the heritage Visitors Route, then lunch from the kids menus at Jonkershuis or Simon's, or a pre-booked kids picnic basket. The estate is wheelchair accessible. In the afternoon, swap to Constantia Uitsig (about 22 min) for its enclosed, shaded playground beside Blockhouse Kitchen and the Bike Park, where little ones can start from about 2–3 on balance bikes. No dogs at Uitsig.
Pair it with: Kirstenbosch or the World of Birds in Hout Bay (see attractions below). Full details in our Constantia guide.
Day trip 2: Durbanville — the northern-suburbs half-day
About 22–31 min from Cape Town without traffic
Nitida (about 24 min) is the anchor: kids breakfast and lunch menus at Tables at Nitida, a designated kiddies' play area on the lawn and lawn picnics. Add Hillcrest (about 22 min) for a Kiddies Pairing, wood-fired pizza and the Quarry, where kids can try catch-and-release fishing, or D'Aria (about 25 min) for the CU Kids play area and a juice pairing. Meerendal (about 31 min) has a Lego Kiddies Tasting and walking trails for active kids.
Pair it with: Anna Beulah Farm or Intaka Island. See our Durbanville guide.
30 to 45 minutes: Stellenbosch
Day trip 3: Helderberg and Polkadraai — ducks, water play and animals
About 29–41 min from Cape Town without traffic
Be at Vergenoegd Löw (about 29 min) for the free 09:00 Indian Runner Duck Parade, then move on to Spier (about 36 min) for the Elemental Play Garden's earth slides, tunnels and water play, plus a children's picnic basket. If your kids prefer fur to water, swap Spier for Vredenheim (about 39 min), where the Dierewerf animal farm, sandpits and bike track sit next to the Big Cats Park. Animal lovers can also try Webersburg (about 41 min), whose dam lawns have tame ducks, chickens, turkeys and rabbits.
Pair it with: strawberry picking at Polkadraai Farm or Cheetah Outreach.
Day trip 4: Bottelary and the R44 — kids' clubs and tastings
About 30–44 min from Cape Town without traffic
Hazendal (about 39 min) is the headline: the supervised Wonderdal edutainment centre for ages 5–13 and a fantasy tree playground for younger siblings. Nearby, Koelenhof (about 30 min) has an enclosed play park and a KOEL Kids grape-juice tasting, Villiera (about 30 min) offers a Little Rangers juice pairing and wildlife game drives, and Warwick (about 39 min) has the Fountain of Youth play area, kids picnics and a vineyard safari with non-alcoholic drinks for children. Older kids who love bikes should head to Blaauwklippen (about 44 min) for the bike park, pump track and zipline.
Pair it with: Exotic Animal World in Klapmuts. See the full Stellenbosch guide.
40 to 55 minutes: Paarl and Franschhoek
Day trip 5: Simondium and Paarl — gardens, jumping pillows and jungle gyms
About 41–52 min from Cape Town without traffic
Start at Babylonstoren (about 41 min), where under-18s enter the garden free, kids can feed donkeys, and Soetmelksvlei (Wednesday to Sunday) adds an indoor playhouse and farm animals. After lunch, choose Domaine Brahms (about 45 min) for a R100 Kiddies Tasting package with a meal, slushy, jumping pillow and water slide (Wednesday to Sunday), or Rhebokskloof (about 52 min) for a jungle gym, jumping castles, a kids menu and kids picnics in season (September to May). Prams struggle on Babylonstoren's gravel paths, so bring a carrier.
Pair it with: Drakenstein Lion Park or Le Bonheur Reptile Adventures. See our Paarl guide.
Day trip 6: Franschhoek valley — tree houses and pump tracks
About 47–56 min from Cape Town without traffic
Boschendal (about 47 min) can fill a whole day: the Tree House playground, an MTB pump track (with parental supervision), Werf picnics with kids baskets and the Deli for casual food. If you have energy for a second stop, Allée Bleue (about 49 min) does herb-garden picnics (ask about a kids picnic when you book) and Sunday clay-pot painting, Leopard's Leap (about 53 min) has a free bicycle pump track and kiddies menu, and Franschhoek Cellar (about 55 min) has a covered play park with childminders — perfect on a drizzly day.
Pair it with: Playrock Adventure Park or the Huguenot Memorial Museum. See our Franschhoek guide.
The long day: Walker Bay
Day trip 7: Benguela Cove and Hermanus
About 64–82 min from Cape Town without traffic
Break the drive at Paul Clüver in Elgin (about 64 min) for BLOEM's kids' play area and kids menu or the Pizza Garden, then continue to Benguela Cove (about 82 min). Its kids' line-up includes 18-hole Pirate Adventure Golf and a Splash Park (both Friday and Saturday plus public and school holidays only), jungle gyms, giant games, kids meals at Blackbeard's Diner and a Kids Vineyard Safari & Tasting. If you're staying over, Stanford Hills (about 119 min) adds quad biking and MTB hire at half price for kids 12 and under, horse riding and a children's play area. Full shortlist: our Hermanus & Walker Bay family guide.
If the weather turns
Cape weather can flip in an hour, so keep a covered plan B in your back pocket:
- Franschhoek Cellar (about 55 min): a covered, fenced play park with childminders and a full under-12 menu.
- Babylonstoren (about 41 min): Soetmelksvlei's indoor playhouse (Wednesday to Sunday).
- Hazendal (about 39 min): Wonderdal's supervised STEM and nature play zones for ages 5–13 — ask which zones are under cover when you book.
- Groot Constantia (about 24 min): the heritage Visitors Route keeps curious kids busy under a roof.
- Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront is the nearest big indoor option on the way home.

Day-trip tips
- Beat the traffic. Leave before 09:00 and head home by 15:00, especially on the N1 and N2.
- One farm for toddlers, two for older kids. Don't over-schedule.
- Book ahead. Picnics at Spier, Boschendal and Rhebokskloof need about 24 hours' notice; Benguela Cove's kids baskets need 24 hours too.
- Sort the driver. Choose a sober driver or a transfer — see Uber vs self-drive with kids.
- Pack the basics. Spare clothes, sunscreen and hats. Our what to pack list helps.
