Hermanus and Walker Bay Wine Tours

Coastal wine day tours to Hermanus and Hemel-en-Aarde — longer drives, cooler climate.

Last checked: 6 October 2026

Hermanus is best known for its whales, but just behind the town lies the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, one of the Cape's most celebrated cool-climate wine areas, with Bot River, Stanford and the Elgin Valley close by. A Hermanus wine tour can be a safari-truck hop-on, a guided day with a local, a horse ride to a tasting deck or a hike through fynbos to the cellar door. This guide covers tours run from Hermanus and Walker Bay, day trips from Cape Town and, separately, Elgin.

How we checked this

Every tour was checked on the operator's own website on 6 October 2026, except where we say a site was down. None of these operators shows a year on its prices, so every price below is labelled "no year shown". Confirm the current rate when you book. We also say whether tastings and lunch are included.

Bouchard Finlayson is temporarily closed. Its Hemel-en-Aarde estate is closed while it's transformed. Tastings and sales have moved to the Pop Up by Bouchard Finlayson, Ground Floor, Harbour Square Hotel, 5 Harbour Road, Hermanus (official notice). Where a tour below lists Bouchard Finlayson, ask the operator whether that stop has been swapped or moved to the Pop Up.

Hop-on and driver hire in the Hemel-en-Aarde

Wine Hoppers — Hopper Wine Safari

Distinct trait: the valley's hop-on, in an open safari truck with a driver every hour.

Tickets are sold at the Hermanus Village Market ticket office (Stall 18, Market Square), and the day starts at Whalehaven. From there you hop between the wineries on that day's route, which varies by day of the week. The farms on the routes are Whalehaven, Hermanuspietersfontein, La Vierge, Newton Johnson, Bosman Hermanus, Ataraxia, Spookfontein and Creation. It runs daily, with four departure times between 09:00 and 16:00. Drivers will hold any wine you buy.

Price: R520 per person and R200 for children aged 2–17, transport only (no year shown). Tasting fees are paid at each winery; the operator's FAQ quotes R25 to R40 per person, which may be out of date. Book lunch directly with a winery.

Wine Hoppers also runs an Idiom Eco-Safari near Somerset West (R900 per person, no year shown; tasting or a meal afterwards is optional and not clearly included, and the minimum group is given as both two and four).

The operator is based in Kleinmond. Minimum two guests.
