Rooted in Pinotage—on Bottelary Road

Bellevue Wine Estate sits on Bottelary Road, Koelenhof, Stellenbosch—wine-route framing: Bottelary Hills. The farm’s public identity is inseparable from Pinotage: in 1953, then-farmer Pieter Krige (P.K.) Morkel, unable to source Gamay, planted one of South Africa’s first commercial Pinotage vineyards after advice from Elsenburg / Stellenbosch Agricultural College. Together with Paul Sauer of Kanonkop, he was among the earliest commercial Pinotage growers.

In 1959, Bellevue’s Pinotage won the General Smuts Trophy as best young wine at the Cape Wine Show. Stellenbosch Farmers Winery later bottled Bellevue Pinotage under the Lanzerac label (1961)—cited by the estate as the first bottled Pinotage sold in the world. The 1953 Pinotage block remains in production and feeds the Heritage Pinotage. A related old Cinsault story (Heritage Cinsault from mid-century plantings) sits beside it in tasting menus.

Grant history on the official story page: land known as Houd den Mond granted 5 October 1701; Morkel family ownership from 1861 for over 150 years; later ownership change to the Neethling family (Marinus Neethling from 2017 in trade coverage). Original cellar roots are traced to 1820 (Johannes ‘Jan’ Julius Mechau); P.K. expanded the cellar in the 1940s after earlier mixed farming (dairy, Merino sheep, guavas) gave way to a wine focus. Long-serving winemaker Wilhelm Kritzinger is widely credited in recent reviews for old-vine work.

Visit: Manor House tastings

Bellevue restored its historic Manor House (National Heritage building) as the dedicated tasting room—announced publicly in late 2025 as a new visitor era focused on site-specific, old-vine, minimal-intervention wines. Tastings are indoors in that dedicated space (not on the lawn). Bookings essential (tastings@bellevue.co.za).

Wine range highlights

Pinotage ladder: Estate Pinotage → Reserve Pinotage → Heritage Pinotage (1953 old-vine single vineyard; extended French-oak maturation on technical sheets). Limited icons such as Dirkie Pinotage appear in specialist retail.

Other estate / reserve lines commonly listed: Chenin Blanc (including old-vine / Heritage Chenin references), Cinsault (Estate & Heritage), Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Atticus Cape blend, Tumara Bordeaux-style blend, and Canto Pinot Noir sparkling. White and red glass/bottle prices are published on the visit menus.

Old-vine messaging from the team: among Stellenbosch’s oldest average vine ages on the farm, with blocks spanning decades (youngest cited around 25 years; oldest into the 70s in recent interviews). Decomposed granite / Cartreff soils and cool southern aspects feature in Heritage Pinotage vineyard notes. The estate’s hashtag #RootedInPinotage summarises the visitor pitch: history first, then the glass.

FAQ

Is Bellevue open every day for tasting?

Sales days differ from full tasting days; Mondays–Tuesdays have been sales-only in published hours. Winter may pause Manor House tastings—verify live.

Why is Pinotage the headline?

1953 commercial planting, 1959 trophy success, and continuous production from that heritage block.

Who owns it now?

Neethling family ownership after long Morkel tenure; confirm host introductions on arrival.

Must I book?

Yes for tastings—bookings essential.

Bottelary Hills visit tips

Allow time for the Manor House story tasting rather than a rushed flight. Ask specifically for Heritage Pinotage and Heritage Cinsault if open. Pair with other Bottelary Road cellars only after separate bookings. No invented crowd or “always packed lawn” claims—follow the estate’s seasonal notices and book the experience you actually want (story tasting vs glass on the lawn vs Medley pairing). Bellevue rewards travellers who care about cultivar history as much as landscape: the 1953 vines are the point of the visit. If you only have a weekday morning, check whether it is a sales-only day before you drive for a tasting you cannot book.
