Charles Fox Cap Classique Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 29 km from Cape Town.
Charles Fox Cap Classique Wine Estate is a specialist Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) cellar on 89 Valley Road, Elgin 7180 — a focused sparkling-wine destination rather than a broad still-wine farm. Charles and Zelda Fox purchased Furneaux farm in 2005 after searching for Cap Classique-specific cool-climate terroir, then built an estate cellar in 2010 with underground storage capacity of about 200 000 bottles. The vision, published on the official site and visitor directories, is to make traditional-method Cap Classique comparable to the world’s best sparkling wines — using only the Champagne trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, grown, fermented and bottled on the property.
For travellers building an Elgin wine route day from Cape Town or the Overberg, Charles Fox is the stop when you want bubbles done with estate control: vineyards, underground ageing, and a tasting menu built entirely around MCC.
Estate plantings cover roughly 6.3 hectares across ten blocks, facing north-east and south at elevations between about 230 m and 300 m above sea level. Rows follow a north-west to south-east orientation on Perold trellising, chosen in part to limit wind damage in this exposed cool valley. Soil analysis associated with the estate describes mainly Tukulu soils with a thin clay horizon grading into weathered shale — water-retentive ground where drip irrigation is used sparingly (the estate notes irrigation at most twice a year).
Viticultural guidance has included clone and site advice from Paul Wallace and ongoing consulting from Kevin Watt (from 2008). French Cap Classique know-how has historically been associated with consultant Nicolas Follet. The underground facility supports long bottle ageing on the lees — the structural advantage that defines Charles Fox’s premium cuvées, including the Cipher line.
Charles Fox does not dilute the cellar-door story with a long still-wine list. Official tasting options currently present:
Flagship Cipher Blanc de Noirs is positioned as a long-lees, connoisseur Cap Classique from top cuvées aged in the underground cellars. The official news pages celebrate a decade of releases since the maiden Cap Classique launch on 13 October 2012, and document Platter Guide and Tim Atkin recognition for selected vintages — including the 2018 Cipher Blanc de Noirs named Cap Classique of the Year with 98 points in the 2025 Platter Guide. Quote only awards the estate itself publishes; ask at the tasting room which bottles are pouring on the day you visit.
Verified tasting hours from the official contact page:
Booking is not required for smaller parties; groups of 14 or more should book ahead. Primary contacts published by the estate include Charles Fox on +27 82 569 2965, Zelda Fox on +27 82 471 3444, and email charlesfoxmcc@gmail.com (sales also listed via sales@charlesfox.co.za). The estate delivers within South Africa with a stated minimum order of six bottles — useful if you taste and want cases shipped later.
Directions (official): From the N2 near Peregrine Farm Stall, turn into Viljoenshoop Road. After about 5 km turn left onto Highlands Road; after another ~5 km turn left into Valley Road. The estate is roughly 1 km further on the left at 89 Valley Road.
There is no full restaurant on site in standard visitor descriptions — plan lunch at nearby Elgin addresses (for example South Hill or other valley kitchens) and keep Charles Fox as a dedicated sparkling tasting. The setting is homely and valley-facing; outdoor seating when weather allows is part of the appeal.
Elgin’s cool climate, altitude and maritime influence favour slow ripening and high natural acidity — the raw material Cap Classique needs. Pairing Charles Fox with a still-wine Elgin stop (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc specialists) gives a complete cool-climate day without repeating the same flight style. Arrive mid-morning on a weekday for the longer 17:00 closing window, or book a weekend slot if travelling with a large group.
Office hours for sales enquiries are listed Monday–Friday 10:00–16:00. Distributors for Cape Town and Gauteng are named on the contact page if you are a trade buyer rather than a leisure visitor.
Yes — the estate is dedicated to traditional-method MCC from estate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
