Glen Carlou: Reputation, Collection and Essential tastings on Simonsberg-Paarl

Glen Carlou sits on the northern foothills of the Simonsberg near Klapmuts, in the Simonsberg-Paarl ward—an elegant bridge between Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. The estate packages wine, cuisine and contemporary art in one visit: three priced tasting flights, a seasonal lunch restaurant under chef Riaan van Schalkwyk, and a rotating art gallery.

Official visit page: glencarlou.com/visit. Book tastings and lunch separately on glencarlou.com/book or +27 21 875 5528 / hello@glencarlou.co.za.

Three current tasting experiences

All three flights are published on the official visit page (snack platters scale with the tasting where noted):

  • The Glen Carlou Reputation — R260 pp: flagship range — Blanc de Blancs MCC Brut, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grand Classique, Quartz Stone Chardonnay and Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small snack platter
  • The Collection — R240 pp: choose any four from Muscat d’Alexandrie (Dry), Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon, Pinotage, Petit Verdot, Tannat & Red Blend (Bordeaux); snack platter included
  • Essential — R120 pp: lifestyle range — five wines: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grand Classique (Bordeaux blend)

Tasting-room hours (visit / book pages): Monday–Sunday 10:00–16:30. Note: the contact page has historically listed weekday opening from 09:00—confirm at booking if you plan an early arrival.

Restaurant lunch

Lunch is served daily 12:00–15:00 with last orders 15:30, featuring seasonal menus and sustainably sourced ingredients, terrace and vineyard views. Chef Riaan draws on Mediterranean spices, French technique and Asian accents while keeping local produce central. In winter the restaurant observes two weekly closure days that can vary—check the live booking page for current closures before you lock a Friday lunch ritual.

Large groups (8+): R150 pp deposit; 12.5% service charge for parties of 8+. Outside food and drinks are not permitted (ask about cake fees). Reservations are held for a 60-minute grace period. Wine tasting and lunch must be reserved separately—do not assume one booking covers both.

Art gallery

The on-site gallery presents contemporary, pop and modern South African work across installation, photography, embroidery, ceramics, painting and sculpture, with rotating exhibitions curated with an eye to identity and archive themes. Curator contact for catalogues: gallery@glencarlou.co.za. Gallery hours on the contact page have been listed Monday–Sunday 10:00–17:00—useful if you want art without a full lunch booking.

Signature Day and special events

Glen Carlou occasionally hosts ticketed signature events. An example published for Saturday 17 October 2026 (Signature Day, 11:00–16:00): Cap Classique and canapés with sabrage (Cellarmaster Johnnie Calitz), vintage Quartz Stone and Gravel Quarry tasting (four whites + four reds) in the gallery, three-course long-table lunch and guided gallery tour; adults 18+; max about 60 guests; priced around R1,200 non-members / R1,020 Wine Club on the event page. Dietary queries for that event have been directed to carika@glencarlou.co.za. Treat event dates and prices as ticket-specific—always recheck glencarlou.com/signatureday before planning around them.

Wine personality

Glen Carlou’s reputation rests on Chardonnay, structured reds and the Grand Classique Bordeaux-style blend, with MCC (Blanc de Blancs) opening the flagship flight. Quartz Stone and Gravel Quarry are the cellar’s serious single-site statements—ask for current vintages in the Reputation tasting. Collection lets explorers sample less common Cape styles (Tannat, Petit Verdot, dry Muscat) without committing to the full flagship ladder.

Planning a Simonsberg foothills day

Start with an Essential or Collection flight mid-morning, lunch on the terrace, then browse the gallery before continuing to Franschhoek or central Paarl. Klapmuts access makes Glen Carlou a logical first or last stop when linking the N1 corridor to the Simonsberg ward. Pair with other foothill cellars if you want a quieter art-and-wine afternoon rather than Suider-Paarl crowds.

FAQ

Which tasting should I choose?

Reputation for flagships and icons; Collection if you want to pick four styles; Essential for a lighter, lifestyle overview at R120.

Can I walk in for lunch?

Possible when space allows, but the estate strongly pushes online/phone booking—especially for groups and terrace preference.

Do tastings include food?

Reputation and Collection include a small snack platter scaled to the tasting; Essential is wine-focused at the published R120 price.

Why Glen Carlou ranks for Paarl-route SEO

Transparent flight prices (R120–R260), a chef-led lunch window and a real gallery give Glen Carlou more depth than a tasting-only stop. Cite the published Reputation / Collection / Essential ladder, keep Signature Day tickets separate from everyday visits, and you give travellers accurate Simonsberg-Paarl expectations without inventing awards or hours.
