Hazendal Wine Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 27 km from Cape Town.
Hazendal Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms, nestled in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch. The story begins in 1699, when German settler Christoffel Hazenwinkel was granted land by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Inspired by his surname and the Cape hares (hazen) of the valley, he named the place Hazendal—“valley of the hares.” Cape Dutch buildings rose in the 18th century; later the Bosman family held the farm for five generations and planted the first vines.
In 1994, Russian-born entrepreneur Dr Mark Voloshin purchased Hazendal. Under Voloshin family stewardship the estate was restored and reimagined as a multifaceted Winelands destination—Cape Dutch heritage woven with contemporary design, hospitality, art and a distinctive Russian cultural thread. After major renovation work, Hazendal reopened as a full lifestyle estate around 2018, and today it combines serious Bottelary winemaking with hotel, spa, garden, culinary and leisure offerings. The estate’s public ethos is to inspire cultural conversations through thoughtful wine, crafted luxury and meaningful art—asking what a wine estate should be in 21st-century South Africa.
Hazendal’s vineyards sit in the Bottelary Hills ward, where proximity to False Bay brings cool maritime breezes that moderate summer heat and stretch ripening. Soils of deep decomposed granite (with some shale) are often credited for minerality and structural tension in the wines. The estate’s current wine story emphasises minimal intervention, hand harvesting, and wines that express Bottelary place rather than heavy cellar makeup. Each vintage is studied for its impact on the vines; purity of fruit is a stated priority.
Cellarmaster Kiara Scott Farmer leads this chapter. Her public mantra—“Winemaking is an artistic endeavour; creating something that reflects a sense of place and culture”—matches Hazendal’s broader cultural brief. Under her guidance the estate is shifting from conventional farming toward organic viticulture, with a stated goal of certified organic status by 2030. Biodiversity, habitat restoration and soil microbial health are part of the programme. 2026 marks the planting of 2.8 hectares of a White Field Blend comprising 13 varieties—a climate-resilient experiment as much as a stylistic one.
Wine collections discussed by the estate and press include a Bottelary Hills line (for example Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir Rosé) and an Estate Collection exploring selected sites (Chenin Blanc, white blend, Pinotage, Carignan and others). Cap Classique, whites, rosés and reds are all part of the tasting offer in the wine lounge. Recent vintages have earned strong show recognition in trade coverage—confirm current medals and open bottles at the lounge rather than relying on a static list.
Hazendal is as much a destination estate as a cellar door. The Hazendal Hotel offers suites and villas for overnight stays, complemented by a luxury spa with massages, facials and detox wraps. Landscaped gardens by internationally acclaimed designer Leon Kluge, plus an organically grown Harvest Garden, frame walks and photo stops. Culinary experiences focus on precise cooking with organic ingredients; art and culture programming invites conversations rooted in African heritage and contemporary South African expression, with Russian cultural experiences (such as tea ceremonies) appearing in the estate’s broader hospitality narrative.
Leisure sports—golf, kids’ putting and padel—add a playful layer for families and groups. Event venues support weddings, concerts and conferences. In short: plan more than a 45-minute tasting if you want the full Hazendal day. Overnight stays make the most of spa, gardens and evening dining without rushing the wine lounge.
Official contact: +27 21 903 5034, enquiries@hazendal.co.za. Website: hazendal.co.za. Address guidance on the site points to Bottelary Road, with a new entrance from Ronelle Street via Kruis Street, Stellenbosch, 7599—use current GPS/directions from the estate when navigating, because entrance routes have changed.
Book wine-lounge tastings and hotel stays ahead, especially on weekends. Hazendal works as a half-day or overnight Bottelary anchor: gardens and lunch, a guided tasting with Scott Farmer’s team narrative, then spa or padel if you are staying over. Compared with quieter Bottelary family farms, Hazendal is the full cultural campus—plan accordingly and leave time to walk the gardens.
The farm dates to 1699, making it one of South Africa’s oldest wine estates.
