Stellenbosch · Western Cape
Meinert Wines is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 35 km from Cape Town.
Meinert Wines is a small, premium Stellenbosch producer on Devon Crest Vineyards in Devon Valley—a sheltered fold of the Stellenbosch Valley wine route with granite soils and views that open toward False Bay on clear days. Official positioning emphasises terroir-driven, small-batch wines from a compact 16-hectare estate, with additional fruit historically drawn from contracted parcels further afield when the team needs specific styles.
For visitors, the headline experience is unambiguous on the official site: a personalised wine tasting hosted so the winemaker and team can give proper attention. Booking is essential; there are no published walk-in hours, flight lists, or tasting fees on meinertwines.com as of 2026. That intimacy is the point—not a high-volume lawn tasting.
Martin Meinert purchased Devon Crest Farm in 1987, then an 11.5 ha property known administratively as Remainder of Farm 78, District of Stellenbosch. Vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage had been planted in 1975. Leaf-roll virus had debilitated many vines, so a systematic replant programme began in 1989 and was finally completed in 2008. In 1997 the family added an adjoining parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted in 1989, bringing the farm to today's 16 ha.
Official home copy frames continuous craftsmanship at the estate since 1987, specialising in Bordeaux varietals, signature blends, and distinctive whites on Stellenbosch granite. Branding leans on a distinctive eagle logo—quill in one claw, tastevin in the other—inspired (and playfully adapted) from the Meinert family's printing heritage in Namibia and the birds of prey that circle Devon Crest. Wine names such as Printer's Ink echo that print-shop story.
From the official wine-tasting page (meinertwines.com/wine-tasting/):
Stellenbosch Wine Routes member copy has historically described intimate cellar tastings (including a covid-era maximum of about twelve people). Treat capacity notes as contextual; confirm current group limits when booking. Guided walks, vineyard tours, and harvest activities appear on some tertiary route listings—verify on the day rather than treating them as a fixed menu.
The official Cellar shop organises wines into Flagship, Family, and Meinert ranges. Published examples (vintages rotate—check the shop) include:
Flagship — vine-for-vine, berry-by-berry ambition reflecting estate terroir at its purest: "Synchronicity"; Straw Wine (Sémillon); "6Chen" Chenin Blanc.
Family — small-batch, inquisitive parcels: "Italian Job" White Merlot; "The Graduate" Syrah; "German Job" Riesling.
Meinert range — thoughtful everyday-to-premium expressions: Merlot; Cabernet Sauvignon; "Printer's Ink" Pinotage; Sauvignon Blanc; entry "Le Berry" red and "La Berry" white.
Route directories also associate the estate with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Semillon, and other Bordeaux/Cape cultivars—consistent with a Devon Valley Bordeaux-leaning toolkit plus playful Family bottlings.
Devon Valley's granite-derived soils and valley climate favour structured reds and precise whites. Meinert's replant story matters: virus-clean vines and patient vineyard rebuilding underpin the Flagship claim of intrinsic vineyard connection. False Bay proximity brings cooling air that helps retain freshness in whites and aromatic lift in reds—geography visitors feel when they stand on the property after booking.
Devon Valley itself is a quieter alternative to the busiest Stellenbosch corridors: farm lanes, dam reflections, and a cluster of boutique cellars rather than coach-park tourism. Meinert fits that mood. Guests who value conversation with the people who farm and ferment will prefer an appointment here over a timed flight at a larger icon estate.
Devon Valley is popular with self-drive groups hopping between larger lawns. Meinert's model is the opposite: small estate, small teams, personalised pours. Publishing invented walk-in hours would send disappointed guests to a quiet gate. The correct portal message is book first, then enjoy Devon Crest—and if the calendar is full, buy Synchronicity, 6Chen, or Printer's Ink online and taste elsewhere the same day.
1. Email or phone before you drive the Devon Valley loop 2. Ask which wines will be poured (Flagship vs Family vs Meinert range) and whether a fee applies / is refundable on purchase 3. Combine with other Stellenbosch Valley / Devon Valley stops that publish walk-in hours if your group needs a backup plan 4. Shop online via meinertwines.com if travel dates do not align with an appointment 5. Confirm GPS/directions to Devon Crest Vineyards—valley lanes are easy to overshoot without a pinned map
