Zorgvliet Wines: Banghoek Valley Estate with Picnics, Dining & Cape Dutch Tasting

Five kilometres from Stellenbosch in the heart of Banghoek Valley, Zorgvliet Wines occupies a 220-hectare Helshoogte Road estate framed by Simonsberg and Klein Drakenstein peaks. Dating to 1692 and revived by the van der Merwe family since 2002, Zorgvliet combines high-slope Bordeaux-focused wines, a restored thatched manor tasting room, Grapes & Greens picnics, De Vliet Country Bistro, Banghoek Lounge evenings, and lodge hospitality—an all-day Banghoek destination on the Stellenbosch wine route between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

History & Restoration

Originally established by Casper Wilders, the property changed hands over three centuries before entrepreneur Mac van der Merwe acquired it at auction in 2002, when vineyards and the manor had fallen into disrepair. The manor house—rebuilt after a fire around 1860—was meticulously restored with its thatch roof and conserved ceilings, reclaiming Cape Dutch romance documented in commissioned paintings by South African artist Robert Koch. Today the building houses the wine tasting room with contemporary Cape Dutch architectural presence.

Owner Stephan van der Merwe continues hands-on family stewardship, emphasising classic French-inspired reds and whites from steep Simonsberg-facing slopes. The Zorgvliet family ethos stresses enduring client relationships, local community tradition, and service as the path to world-class status—not volume alone.

Terroir & Location: Banghoek

Vines cling to south-eastern Simonsberg slopes roughly 320–540 metres above sea level on thin decomposed granite—cool nights, bright days, and elevation that favour Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and related varieties. The Banghoek amphitheatre between mountain walls creates a sheltered, scenic valley perfect for outdoor dining when Helshoogte Pass winds whip higher ridges.

Silver Myn (Silvermyn) wines recall an 18th-century silver-prospecting legend—and occasional con—on the slopes above the farm, giving the second label a playful historic hook while delivering pocket-friendly Banghoek character. Premium Zorgvliet bottlings aim higher: Grand Cuvée thinking for flagship blends named for family members.

Signature Wines

  • Zorgvliet premium tier — single-vineyard selections including flagship Richelle Bordeaux blend and Simoné Bordeaux-style white (Sauvignon Blanc–Semillon) from high-lying Simonsberg slopes
  • Silver Myn / Silvermyn — accessible second label spanning Sauvignon Blanc and other styles; historically included Banghoek’s early Pinot Noir experiments
  • Individual Bordeaux varieties bottled alongside blends for drinkers who want grape clarity

Production remains boutique relative to larger Stellenbosch cellars (hundreds of thousands of bottles annually rather than industrial scale), with sustainably minded cool-climate whites from granite slopes standing out for freshness and typicity.

Visitor Experience: Picnics, Bistro & Lounge

Grapes & Greens picnic area (daily roughly 11:00–17:00) offers thoughtfully curated baskets for couples, vegetarians, meat-lovers, families, and children, with blankets, umbrellas, lawn space, jungle gym, and sandpit—views of vines and mountains included. Drinks are available from the deli on collection day.

De Vliet Country Bistro serves breakfast, lunch, and evening pizzas under oaks in a family-friendly country setting. Banghoek Lounge delivers playful fine small-plate dining at night (typically 18:00–22:00, last seating earlier) with veranda summer seating and winter fireplace—bookings only. Country lodge accommodation, pool with Simonsberg views, and padel courts extend stays beyond a tasting stop.

Wine tasting in the historic manor typically runs weekdays from morning through late afternoon, with adjusted weekend hours—confirm before travel. Bookings are strongly advised for restaurants and picnics via hospitality contacts on the official site.

Banghoek Days Done Properly

Banghoek Valley rewards travellers who slow down. Zorgvliet’s mix of manor tasting, picnic lawns, bistro meals, and evening lounge culture means you can structure an entire day—or overnight lodge stay—without leaving the estate. Families use the playground and picnic baskets; couples book Banghoek Lounge; wine-focused guests compare Richelle and Simoné against Silver Myn for a clear premium-versus-second-label lesson in Banghoek granite fruit.

Positioned on Helshoogte Road, Zorgvliet slots naturally between Stellenbosch town tastings and Franschhoek-bound afternoon drives. Spring blossom and autumn colour are especially photogenic against whitewashed Cape Dutch buildings and vineyard greens. Whether you come for Bordeaux-leaning reds, cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc, or simply a blanket under the oaks with a bottle open, Zorgvliet exemplifies the leisurely Stellenbosch wine route ideal: scenery, hospitality, and wines of place in one Banghoek address.

Why Visit Zorgvliet

  • Banghoek Valley scenery on Helshoogte Road between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

Practical Visit Tips

Address: Helshoogte Road, Banghoek Valley—crest the pass from Stellenbosch toward Franschhoek and follow estate signage. Ideal combined with Thelema, Tokara, or other Helshoogte neighbours for a mountain-pass tasting trail. Arrive with children for the picnic playground, or book Banghoek Lounge for an adults’ evening. Secure parking on site. Check seasonal closures around year-end holidays. Allow a full afternoon if combining tasting, picnic, and a walk among the oaks—Banghoek rewards unhurried schedules.
