Mountain of Destiny

Mont Destin is the Stellenbosch-linked wine story of Samantha and Erny Bürgin—a pioneering hilltop dream christened when they first saw Table Mountain glowing at sunset from untamed land above the R44 corridor near Klapmuts. The brand’s public face today is destinyshiraz.co.za, centred on the handcrafted Destiny Shiraz lineage and the later Spirit of Destiny Shiraz, with contact via Samantha Bürgin (info@montdestin.co.za | 083 288 4985).

Historic farm references place the original Mont Destin Wine Farm on Valley Road, off the R44 between Klapmuts and Stellenbosch (Greater Simonsberg / Klapmuts fringe). German and Cape directories once described roughly 20 hectares later reduced for ultra-premium focus, with Rhône-leaning plantings such as Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, hand harvest and sorting, and long French-oak ageing (often cited around 18 months or more for top lots). Afro-chic architecture inspired by Luis Barragán featured in earlier visitor marketing when the cellar welcomed guests—an architectural story as distinctive as the Shiraz itself.

From dirt track to Destiny

The couple met in France in 1995; by 1996 they were hunting Cape winelands land. After months of disappointment, an agent’s tip led them up a bush-scraped dirt track to a hilltop sunset—and the name Mont Destin (“Mountain of Destiny”). They drilled for water (striking a vein after three attempts at ~120 m), laid electricity from ~2 km away, soil-tested the Swiss-cheese landscape, and planted with specialist advice. Neither came from wine farming—Samantha’s BCom and Erny’s German recycling business were unlikely prep—but they persisted toward a dream of vineyards, guest house, restaurant and cellar.

Their first shared wine was a 2002 Shiraz. Shirley Bassey’s La Passione on the cellar speakers helped name the emotional arc: Destiny. Each vintage they selected the two or three most extraordinary Shiraz barrels; Samantha hand-numbered labels; both signed back labels; bottles were hand-labelled; and the Bürgin family ring was pressed into gold wax on every front. Parallel lines in older trade notes include Passione (Shiraz–Cinsault–Grenache) and 11 Barrels, plus special editions—always small-lot, handcraft ethos. In 2004 they welcomed their son—another chapter that reframed what the mountain dream meant beyond barrels and wax seals.

Legacy after loss

Erny’s cancer battle ended on 19 December 2015. In 2017 Samantha sold the farm—packing twenty years of memories—and moved with her son toward a new life in Franschhoek, while keeping ownership of the Mont Destin name; their new home carries the same name. The website now reads as celebration and continuity: Destiny Shiraz and Spirit of Destiny as tributes to creativity, courage and joie de vivre, not as a busy wine-route tasting venue. Samantha has written openly about questioning whether wine still belonged in her future after grief—and about releasing Spirit of Destiny as a path that honours Erny without pretending the pioneering farm chapter never closed.

Visiting today

As of research in 2026, destinyshiraz.co.za does not publish verified public tasting hours, walk-in experiences, or booking menus. Older third-party claims (for example novelty cellar activities) are not confirmed on the current official site and should not be assumed. Collectors and travellers interested in Destiny bottles should contact Samantha directly and treat availability as allocation- and vintage-dependent. If you are building a Stellenbosch day around open tasting rooms, put neighbouring R44 / Simonsberg estates on the schedule and treat Destiny as a bottle-led discovery.

Greater Simonsberg / R44 story fit

Mont Destin belongs in the portal as a boutique Shiraz legend and human story—pioneer plantings, hand-waxed Destiny bottles, and a brand that outlived the sale of the hill. It is not currently marketed as a standard Stellenbosch tasting-room stop. Pair neighbouring Greater Simonsberg estates for walk-in hospitality; approach Mont Destin / Destiny Shiraz through the bottle and direct contact. For SEO and traveller honesty, the page should celebrate provenance without inventing visitor amenities the brand no longer advertises.

Visit tips

  • Contact Samantha before assuming any farm-gate visit
  • Seek Destiny Shiraz and Spirit of Destiny as the narrative core
  • Do not rely on outdated Pinotage-bath or walk-in listings
  • Understand the 2017 farm sale vs continued brand ownership
  • Rhône cultivars and handcrafting defined the original style
  • Franschhoek is the family’s post-2017 home base; brand name retained
  • Ideal for collectors of Cape boutique Shiraz with provenance stories
  • Ask about remaining library stock if you collect signed, wax-sealed bottles
