School Holiday Activities at Western Cape Wine Farms

School holiday activities at Western Cape wine farms: Boschendal Tree House, Hazendal Wonderdal, Domaine Brahms and Benguela Cove, verified with tips.

Hunting for school holiday activities at wine farms near Cape Town? A Winelands day is one of the nicest ways to break up a long holiday — fresh air, space to run, and a glass of something for the grown-ups. But "kids welcome" isn't the same as a holiday programme, and plenty of listings blur the two.

So we've been strict. When we audited more than 650 Western Cape wine farms in October 2026, only a handful had a verified school-holiday programme or a clear holiday-season kids offer on their official channels. Those are the farms in this guide. Where an offer has expired or is only for hotel guests, we say so.

How we chose these farms

We included a farm only if its official website, booking page or official social post showed one of these:

  • a supervised holiday programme or kids' club open to day visitors
  • school-holiday pricing or a holiday-branded kids' package
  • extended opening hours for kids' activities during school holidays
  • a dated holiday event for children

Please check dates before you go. Holiday programmes are usually published a few weeks ahead and sell out. Our booking guide covers what to ask.

Supervised holiday programmes

Boschendal — Tree House holiday programmes

Area: Groot Drakenstein, Franschhoek valley · about 47 min from Cape Town without traffic · boschendal.com

Boschendal runs supervised Tree House holiday programmes for ages 4–12 during the school holidays — the spring 2026 programme ran from 28 September to 7 October, sold through Quicket. Outside programme hours, the Tree House playground and kids' play area, the MTB pump track (with parental supervision), Werf picnics with a kids basket (R250 for ages 3–12 when we checked) and the Deli's casual food make it an easy all-day farm.

Good to know: book programme places early and pre-book picnics 24 hours ahead. The farm is cashless. More in our Franschhoek guide.

Hazendal — Wonderdal holiday sessions and workshops

Area: Bottelary, Stellenbosch · about 39 min from Cape Town without traffic · hazendal.co.za

Wonderdal is a fully supervised edutainment centre for ages 5–13, and it publishes separate school-term and school-holiday pricing. When we checked, 1-hour and 2-hour sessions were R100/R140 Monday to Thursday and R160/R210 Friday to Sunday (09:00–17:00) — check the holiday tab for current rates. Hazendal also runs themed kids' workshops, such as the Waste to Wonder recycled-art workshop in September. Under-5s have the fantasy tree playground, toy baskets and big picnic lawns.

Good to know: confirm which venue carries kids menus when you book. Cashless estate. More in the Stellenbosch guide.

Holiday-branded kids' packages

Domaine Brahms — Skool Vakansie Pret

Area: Paarl · about 45 min from Cape Town without traffic · brahms.co.za

Domaine Brahms markets its kids' package as the Kiddies Tasting / Skool Vakansie Pret — R100 when we checked, Wednesday to Sunday. It includes a kiddies meal, a slushy, the jumping pillow and the water slide. Add wood-fired pizza, the Toeka Stoor coffee shop and antiques collection, and pick-your-own olives, and you have a full holiday afternoon at a fixed price.

Good to know: the estate also hosts weddings and events, so phone ahead. See our Paarl guide.

Extended school-holiday hours

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate

Area: Walker Bay · about 82 min from Cape Town without traffic · benguelacove.co.za

During term, Benguela Cove's 18-hole Pirate Adventure Golf opens Friday and Saturday (10:00–18:00), but it also opens on public and school holidays (10:00–18:00), and Blackbeard's Diner keeps extended hours in the school holidays. Add the Splash Park, jungle gyms and giant games, kids meals, kids picnic baskets (R250, 24 hours' notice) and a Kids Vineyard Safari & Tasting (R350), and it's the strongest holiday day out on the coast.

Good to know: Adventure Golf and the Splash Park share the Friday–Saturday plus public/school-holiday schedule. Wheelchair accessible, dogs on leads welcome and cash-free. Full shortlist: our Hermanus & Walker Bay family guide.

Kloovenburg — Kringe in die Bos

Area: Swartland · about 60 min from Cape Town without traffic · kloovenburg.com

Kringe in die Bos, Kloovenburg's family-friendly open-air restaurant with a play park in a natural setting, normally opens Friday to Sunday and public holidays — but it is also open during Western Cape school holidays (09:00–16:30). Tractor rides through the vineyards and day hiking trails add to the outing. This is extended opening rather than a structured programme, but it makes a midweek holiday trip possible. See the Swartland guide.

Dated holiday events to watch for

These ran recently and may well repeat — follow the farms' official channels.

  • Compagniesdrift (Stellenbosch, about 35 min): ran Kids Sip & Bloom flower-arranging mornings (R100 per child, including a cold drink) on 26 September and 3 October 2026, during the spring holidays. There are no permanent kids' amenities, so treat it as an event-only stop.
  • Alto Estate (Stellenbosch, about 42 min): ran a kids eat free school-holiday lunch offer at Klein Alto from 27 March to 8 April 2026 (Tuesday to Friday). It has expired, but the kiddies menu for under-12s remains.

Summer-season kids' offers over the December holidays

These aren't holiday programmes, but they're seasonal kids' offers that fall over the long summer break:

  • Vergelegen (about 49 min): the Children's Adventure Garden is temporarily closed from 14 September to 14 October 2026 (still closed on 5 October) and reopens on 14 October, and picnics (with a kids' picnic for ages 3–10) restart after 1 November 2026.
  • Rhebokskloof (about 52 min): kids picnics for under-12s run September to May.
  • Eikendal (about 37 min): weekend tractor rides run September to April.
  • Excelsior (Robertson, about 131 min): in summer, a child-minder takes kids fishing off the jetty at Graze@Excelsior.

What doesn't count (and why)

  • Spier's Buzz Club (ages 3–12) is for hotel guests only, so it isn't a day-visitor holiday programme. Spier's Elemental Play Garden is open to day visitors, though.
  • Mont Rochelle's Little Corkers activities are mostly aimed at hotel guests, with no formal kids' club.
  • Third-party nanny services advertised at some estates aren't farm-run programmes.
  • Once-off Easter egg hunts listed in past years (for example at Van Loveren, Cavalli and Ormonde) were events, not holiday programmes.

Match the offer to your kids' ages

A sample holiday week

  • Monday: many farms are closed or quiet — make it a beach or nature-reserve day.
  • Tuesday: Boschendal Tree House programme (check which days it runs), then a Werf picnic for lunch.
  • Wednesday: Domaine Brahms' Skool Vakansie Pret package (Wednesday to Sunday).
  • Thursday: Wonderdal at Hazendal, with under-5s on the tree playground.
  • Friday: road trip to Benguela Cove for adventure golf and the Splash Park, or a closer hop to Kringe in die Bos at Kloovenburg.

Two farm days a week is plenty for most families — save the rest for home, beaches and friends.

Holiday planning tips

  • Book early. Boschendal's Tree House programmes and Wonderdal sessions fill up fast in the holidays.
  • Go midweek. Domaine Brahms (Wednesday to Sunday) and Kringe in die Bos at Kloovenburg (open through the Western Cape school holidays) are calmer on weekdays.
  • Expect crowds. Book tables and picnics even on weekdays during December.
  • Sun and water. Hats, sunscreen and spare clothes for Benguela Cove's Splash Park and Domaine Brahms' water slide.
  • Sort the driver. Choose a sober driver — see Uber vs self-drive with kids.
